In a regulatory environment, the Elevator and Lifts Inspector works in a specialized technical field. The incumbent is responsible for the daily administration and enforcement of the Elevator and Lifts Act Regulations and the Amusement Devices Act Regulations. By the issuing of approvals or permits and completing inspections, the inspector ensures that regulations and codes adopted for the protection of public safety are assured and enforced.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical advice and interpretation of the Elevator and Lifts Act, Regulations and Codes;
  • Complete yearly Inspection of existing elevating and lift devices to ensure that regulatory requirements are met and the device is safe for public use;
  • Inspect new elevator installations and major alterations to ensure compliance with the Act and Regulations and Codes and issue inspection certificates;
  • Technical interpretation of the Amusement Device Act and Regulations and Codes;
  • Carry out inspections of amusement devices;
  • Prepare inspection reports and issue repair orders and directives on violations and corrections;
  • Carry out special investigations and prepare report for accidents, equipment failures, unsafe conditions and non‑compliance;
  • Maintain file and records in hard copy and electronic files;
  • Communicate and educate owners, contractors and general public about safety requirements for the operation of elevators and lifts and amusement devices;
  • In the event of an emergency, may be responsible for the evacuation of passengers trapped in an elevator; and
  • Prepare evidence for legal action for violations under the Act and Regulations;

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12;
  • EDM certification (elevating devices mechanic) and/or Certification as a QEI (qualified elevator inspector) and membership to NAESA International supplemented with 2 years post-secondary;
  • Extensive experience in the operation, construction, maintenance or inspection of elevating lift devices;
  • Experience with the administration and interpretation of applicable Acts, Regulations and Codes;
  • Experience in the preparation of reports, maintaining records, and filing information in hard copy and electronic files;
  • Working knowledge of computers, word processing and database programs; and
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Other Qualifications:

  • Fall Arrest and confined spaces;
  • Certification as a NAARSO (National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials) Ride Inspector is considered an asset; and
  • Electromechanical Technology Diploma would be considered an asset
