The West Vancouver Planning, Development and Environmental Services is currently seeking a Permanent Full-Time Plans Examiner III to join our highly qualified team. Reporting to the Supervisor/Senior Plans Examiner, this position is split between advance plans examination and building inspection work. The role involves examining plans, drawings and specifications accompanying more complex permit applications ensuring compliance with the applicable codes and regulations while also conducting building inspections where required.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing an effective plan checking service to ensure the proposed construction of new buildings and alterations to existing buildings are in general compliance with the BC Building Code and Municipal bylaws;
  • Reviewing drawings and documents for primarily complex building permit applications;
  • Coordinating the work of the plan review function with other departmental needs and activities;
  • Issuing permits, maintaining building department records, and preparing reports;
  • Inspecting buildings of all types from the placing of the foundation until the construction is completed;
  • Inspecting complex buildings where required;
  • Providing technical information and assistance to a variety of internal and external contacts;
  • Performing other related duties as required.

The preferred candidate has completed a Diploma in Building Technology from a recognized Institution, and has considerable related experience in the construction industry, the public sector, or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered; and is registered as a qualified Building Official Level 3 with the Building Officials' Association of BC.

In addition, the preferred candidate is a team player who possesses: extensive working knowledge of the BC Building Code; thorough understanding of our Municipal bylaws; strong knowledge of inspection practices and procedures; a demonstrated ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public; and a track record of establishing and maintaining respectful and effective professional relationships at work.
