About Autism Nova Scotia 

Autism Nova Scotia is a community-based organization that builds understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for Autistics/individuals on the autism spectrum and their families through leadership, advocacy, education, training, and programming across the lifespan.

Term: Arranged between the family requiring respite and the Independent Respite Provider, who both indicate their availability on the online application. (This includes location, hours, employment term, etc.)

Direct Report: Respite Providers are evaluated on site by the families requiring respite.

What you'll be doing…

The Respite Supports and Navigation Services Database connects families needing respite with trained and qualified respite providers in their area. This database supports individuals of all ages and diverse abilities. In addition to providing trained respite providers, the Database connects families to respite resources such as community supports, recreation and leisure programs, and funding information. 

Independent Respite Providers are hired by families and are not employed by Autism Nova Scotia. Responsibilities are determined by the family, depending on the needs of the individual. The family requests the Independent Respite Provider to focus on community integration and social interaction.

You must have:

Minimum qualifications:

  • Completion of Respite and Autism Know-How Training is required

  • Up to date Current CPR & First Aid Certification is required

  • A clear, current Criminal Records Check and Child Abuse Registry Search is required

  • Affirming Reference Checks are required

Minimum Skills and Ability:

  • Experience working with individuals living with disabilities

  • Outgoing, sociable, and willing to take initiative

  • Must be compassionate, trustworthy, patient, and reliable

Roles and Duties:

Determined by the family, depending on their needs and wants for their child (i.e. requests the respite provider to focus on community integration and social interaction)

The Respite Provider is responsible for the following: Providing in-home respite care or out-of-home care, for children, youth and/or adults with autism or other disabilities, depending on the needs of the family and of the individual requiring respite. This care can include personal care (feeding, toileting, changing clothing), monitoring and/or help with learning new skills.

Essential and Other Related Job Duties:

  • Access to reliable transportation (travel required)

  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule

Candidates selected for interviews will be contacted and expected to provide at least three recent, relevant references. The successful candidate may be required to provide official transcripts to show proof of academic achievements where applicable.
