JOB SUMMARY:
The Garbage Truck Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient collection, transportation, and disposal of residential and commercial waste throughout the Nation. This role operates a front-load garbage truck to service 4-yard to 6-yard bins at Nation homes and commercial buildings, following established routes, schedules, and safety procedures. The position requires regular vehicle inspections, accurate tracking and documentation, and disposal of waste at approved sites while maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness, and operational reliability.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Equipment Operation and Safety– safely operate an automated front-load garbage truck in accordance with assigned routes, schedules, and safety regulations. Perform residential and commercial waste collection with minimal supervision. Transport waste to designated disposal or transfer sites. Operate the vehicle safely in confined or tight areas. Work overtime, weekends, or holidays as required by operational needs. Proactively identify and mitigate hazardous conditions to ensure safe operations.
- Starting and Operating Procedures– complete daily start-up and shut-down inspections and checklists. Ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition, including checking fluids, tire pressure, and overall cleanliness. Report mechanical issues, damage, or safety concerns to the Waste Manager promptly. Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle, including the cab, hopper, and compactor. Conduct basic vehicle maintenance, including greasing fittings and monitoring fluid levels (oil, transmission, coolant, DEF).
- Documentation and Reporting– maintain accurate logs and records, including route tracking, scale tickets, maintenance logs, work orders, and incident or safety reports. Submit scale tickets and route documentation after each disposal run. Track the number of homes serviced per route and attach documentation as required. Communicate regularly with the Waste Manager regarding schedules, routes, and vehicle condition.
- Daily Activities– complete required forms and log tracking; inspect vehicle systems; clean hopper and compactor; check fluids and tire pressure; maintain vehicle cleanliness (weather permitting).
- Weekly Activities– submit logs and repair requests; accommodate additional or on-call bin pick-ups as required.
- Monthly Activities– submit all documentation and coordinate vehicle servicing or repairs as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- Desired License, and Experience:
o Valid Class 3 or Class 1 Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
o At least two (2) years of industry experience.
- Personal Attributes:
o Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
o Ability to accurately complete daily and weekly forms.
o Ability to maintain a clear and legible logbook.
o Willingness to participate in additional training to meet future operational needs.
- General Employment Requirements
o Criminal Record Check.

o Commercial Driver's Abstract.
