Dog Trainer

JOB SUMMARY:
The Dog Trainer is responsible for providing training techniques and enrichment to the dogs in the care of HSOMH, as well as teaching these techniques to volunteers, staff and our area through dog training classes or workshops. This team member will be working closely with other departments in the shelter to achieve the tasks set forth by HSOMH is key to aid in the success of the overall well-being of the dogs within our care as well as the care and education we provide to the public.
REPORTS TO: Manager, Animal Care
WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Canine Behaviour and Enrichment Specialist (CBES)
SALARY: $20.40/hr
ROLE TYPE: Part-Time, Contract (Until December 31, 2026)
SCHEDULE: 15 hours per week, to be determined with the candidate based on their availability and class schedules, evenings and weekends required as necessary for training class needs. Typically, 1-2 evenings per week and one weekend day per week to facilitate training, assessments and classes.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with the registration, planning and administrative tasks for each program, including classes, behaviour assessments, file updates, and other new or existing training or classes launched
- Collaborate with the CBES and Manager of Animal Care to create new programming
- Prepare and teach a wide variety of learners (webinars, staff, volunteers, classes, kids camp demos etc.)
- Learn and understand prepared lessons and materials
- Lead classes during both daytime and/or evenings
- Help with behaviour modification clients and shadow CBES and Manager of Animal Care while they run online consultations
- Communicate effectively and regularly with individuals both inside and outside the organization
- Support the Animal Care Team with the cleaning of dog kennels
- Handle administrative tasks related to programs, including attendance tracking, reports or statistics, updates, document management, etc.
- Provide environmental enrichment to the dogs at the shelter
- Collaborate on the development and implementation of training and behavior protocols for adoptable dogs.
- Assist the CBES in helping the Volunteers and the Animal Care team in maintaining the training and behavior implementation plans
- Assist in the assessment of the dogs to verify adoptability
- Provide training to the staff and volunteers on behavior and technique
- Provide assistance to the Adoptions team with animal introductions when required
- Maintain accurate records of daily progress and growth of assigned dogs
- Meet with potential fosters and adopters to provide guidance on managing behaviorally challenged dogs and recommend follow-up training to support success at home
- Attend community events where a professional trainer is required
- Teach quarterly training classes to registrants from the public.
- As required, receive animals brought in by APS or the public and log all necessary information
- Monitor the health of and observe the temperament of dogs; reporting any odd or disconcerting behavior(s) to the RVTS's and Manager of Animal Care
- Respond to public enquiries in person or over the telephone

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: High School Diploma or College as applicable
- CAPDT Training certificate or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3 years working as a dog trainer
- Prior experience in a shelter for a minimum of 1 year is preferred
- Knowledge and practical experience in animal health and welfare, ensuring the well-being of sheltered animals used for educational purposes
- Experience working within a fast-paced environment
- Experience working with positive training methods and developing programs for dogs
- Demonstrated ability and comfortable handling animals with varying temperaments
- Possesses an understanding of Canine Learning Theory
- Experience running private, group, and reactivity training lessons
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Valid G license with a clear Drivers Abstract
- Clear Criminal Background Check
- Must be reliable; able to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, overtime as required
