Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) is a national campaign to reduce unnecessary tests and treatments in health care. CWC inspires and engages health care professionals to take leadership in reducing unnecessary tests, treatments, and procedures, and enables them with simple tools and resources that make it easier to choose wisely.
Choosing Wisely Canada is currently looking for a
Senior Communications Specialist
. This person plays a key role in advancing Choosing Wisely Canada's mission by developing and executing strategic communications that engage clinicians, patients, partners, and the public. This role combines strategic planning, content creation, and stakeholder collaboration, with a strong emphasis on translating complex health information into clear, accessible, and impactful messaging.
Strategic Development
- Lead development and implementation of communications strategies for major programs, initiatives and projects within specific portfolios that complement CWC's overall strategy and strategic direction.
- Provide strategic advice to internal team members on messaging, positioning, and audience engagement.
Content Development
- Identify, write and produce high quality content across platforms, including web, social media, newsletters, and reports.
- Design and layout of documents and materials.
- Ensure all communications reflect CWC's brand, voice, and values.
Media And Public Engagement
- Support media relationships, including drafting media releases, backgrounders, and key messages
- Monitor media coverage and emerging issues relevant to CWC.
Collaboration And Leadership
- Work closely with CWC team members, clinician leads, and external stakeholders.
- Mentor and support junior communications staff.
Events
- Lead communications planning for CWC's annual meeting and webinar offerings, including messaging, timelines, and promotional materials.
- Collaborate with CWC team members and external partners to drive agenda development, speaker coordination, and participant engagement.
- Develop and execute pre-event, on-site, and post-event communications to maximize reach and impact.
- Manage external vendors as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (preferably in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field).
- Master's degree in communications, education, or a related field is considered an asset.
- 5-7+ years of progressive experience in communications, preferably in healthcare, public health, or the non-profit sector.
- Proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, InDesign) and/or other design tools (e.g. Canva).
- Design experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experienced developing and executing strategic communications initiatives.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills.
- Strategic thinking and sound judgement.
- Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Superior organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a timely manner and flexibility to adapt to changing workload.
- Experience in WordPress and content management systems is an asset.
- Fluency in French (reading and writing) is an asset.
