Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs general litter control, landscaping, and maintenance duties on landfill sites, facilities, and properties.
  • Assists customers with unloading hazardous household waste (HHW) at the HHW depot, and assists with preparing HHW for disposal.
  • Performs general cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and stooping.
  • Lifts, handles, and carries equipment, supplies, and materials weighing up to 23 kg/50 lbs.
  • Works outdoors at regional landfill sites and properties.
  • Follows health and safety policies and procedures and uses personal protective equipment (e.g., raingear, protective clothing, safety equipment, gloves, safety boots, safety glasses) to mitigate risks associated with working around/with heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, noise, landfill odours, hazardous and toxic waste.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Reading, writing, and math skills, plus 1 year of general labour experience.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, and legislation (e.g., health and safety).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and members of the public.
  • Functional knowledge of the safe operation and use of equipment used to perform work.
  • Ability to read and apply safety information.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region's values.

Additional Information

To be considered for employment as a student, a person must be: registered as a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited institution, or currently recognized as having full-time status by the academic institution but applying for a school vacation, practicum or work term, or returning to full-time studies in the next academic term. Students who are in their final year of academic study and who are not intending to return to full-time studies are eligible for student employment up until the time they convocate. Students participating in education and retraining programs at the post- secondary level, though not full-time students, are eligible for related student employment opportunities, where appropriate.
