Purpose:

The York University School of Medicine (SoM) is dedicated to preparing the next generation of primary care physicians through a patient-centered, community-based approach. The school emphasizes training in diverse, real-world settings and leveraging digital health technologies. With a focus on primary care specialties such as family medicine, psychiatry, and pediatrics, the curriculum will address the evolving needs of communities, particularly underserved urban and rural areas. Reporting to the Executive Director, Operations and Resource Planning, the Director Information Services and Technology is responsible for leading the development and execution of the School of Medicine's IT strategies in alignment with institutional goals. As the York University School of Medicine (SOM) is part of the Faculty of Health, this position will, as required, collaborate with the Executive Officer of Health on related IT matters to ensure alignment and integration across the broader faculty. This role oversees the planning, implementation, and management of technology that support medical education, clinical research, data analytics systems, faculty and staff operations, and compliance with healthcare and academic standards. The Director plays an important leadership role in ensuring the security, reliability, and innovation of IT services to advance the mission of excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. This position further supports York's commitment to sustainability, equity, diversity, and inclusion through the design of inclusive, accessible, and secure technology systems.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Health Informatics.

Certifications such as ITIL, PMP, or CHITP (Certified Health Information Technology Professional) are an asset.Note: Requires verification of degree(s)/credentials(s)

Experience:

7 years related experience with at least 3 years in an academic, healthcare or research environment.

5 years of management experience.

Experience working with systems relevant to the healthcare industry such as EMR/EHR systems (Electronic Medical Records/Electronic Health Records), LMS (Learning Management System), PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System), LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).

Prior leadership experience in change management. capacity to influence senior leadership. experience with governance in an academic/clinical environment.

Experience working with executives, sponsors, and senior management teams across the organization to manage large scale, transformational organization-wide information technology initiatives.

Skills:

Knowledge

In-depth knowledge of health-care data standards (e.g. HL7, FHIR), research informatics tools, big data, bioinformatics.

Knowledge in business process improvement, continuous improvement, and quality management.

Knowledge of Information Technology strategic planning, operations services, and data management.

Knowledge of risk management best practices.

Familiarity with RFI and RFP processes, vendor management, and contract negotiation in support of enterprise IT procurement.

Knowledge of IT service management frameworks (e.g., ITIL), including SLA development, helpdesk operations, and user experience strategies across distributed sites.Skills

Effective negotiation, presentation, and facilitation skills to manage the Information Services & Technology team competing priorities and consensus building.

Ability to understand and interpret complex technical, business concepts and processes, and translate them through documentation distributed to a variety of audiences (technical and non-technical).

Effective communication skills.

Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships.

Effective conflict resolution skills to action challenges with favourable results.

Comprehensive computing skills, including word processing, database management and spreadsheets.

Ability to use numerical modeling, research, and evaluative skills to support data-driven decision-making.

Ability to manage multiple complex projects and competing priorities within constrained timeframes.

Ability to lead procurement processes, including RFI and RFP development, vendor evaluation, contract negotiation, and service onboarding.

Additional Notes:

Works in an office environment with extended periods of working on a computer and telephone. Works flexible and/or extended hours to support operations as a result of strict deadlines, unpredictability circumstances, emergency situations (e.g. campus issues, crisis management, outages, special events) which can include evenings and weekends. On-call outside of regular work hours as required. Travel to other York campuses and clinical partner locations will be required.

  • Compensation:

York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
