JOB SUMMARY

The Wastewater Treatment Branch manages the operation and maintenance of the major City wastewater treatment facility and various communal treatment systems, provides technical expertise for wastewater treatment process technologies, and is responsible to protect public health by ensuring all environmental compliances and preventive and corrective maintenance are performed as required.  

You are responsible to perform routine maintenance and operation of mechanical equipment, systems, and sewage process vessels, at the City's wastewater treatment plant.  Work is performed in compliance with the provincial Ministry of Environment sewage treatment legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other governing federal, provincial legislation regulations/standards/guidelines, as well as City Policies and Procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12

Minimum of 2 years of environmental, industrial, mechanical, chemical or maintenance related work experience preferably in a water or wastewater environment.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES
Must obtain and maintain Ontario MOE Class 2 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate within the timeframe determined by the employer Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated Valid Ontario unrestricted D class driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated is an asset Must complete all required on-the-job training/certifications (e.g. WHMIS, fall arrest, confined space entry, etc.) within the timeframe determined by the employer.  KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of sewage treatment process
  • Fundamentals of computerized maintenance management systems and automated process measurement and control
  • Knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, physics, as well as hydraulics, mechanical and electrical devices
  • Knowledge of current Provincial regulations pertaining to sewage treatment
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret blueprints, drawings and work orders
  • Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act
  • Knowledge of City of Ottawa Policies and Procedures
  • Knowledge of relevant corporate computer systems and applications including MS Office (Outlook, Work, Excel),MAP
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing       
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa's satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.  
  • Driver's License Requirement:  A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver's license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated  
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
