Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Business and IT, the Sessional Lecturer provides instruction to undergraduate students in BUSI 3171U – Advanced Auditing.

The current schedule is:

Thursdays – 5:10PM – 8:00PM

Please note that this course will be delivered in person on Ontario Tech University's north campus in Oshawa, Ontario. Unless required for student registration purposes, the schedule is not subject to change without approval from an Associate Dean and/or the Dean.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities: 

The primary responsibility of the applicant is to (develop and) teach a theoretically, methodologically sophisticated and relevant course at the university level within the parameters of the course description listed above.  In keeping with a technology-enhanced learning environment utilizing laptop computers and wireless connectivity, the Sessional Lecturer will deliver the course using a technology-enhanced learning approach that includes a variety of inclusive teaching and learning strategies and assessments. The Sessional Lecturer will prepare, deliver and grade all course material and assignments and be available for consultation with students during and following completion of the course session.

This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC. The collective agreement may be found on the Human Resources section of our website. Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the contract. 

Qualifications: 

In addition to the Required Education, Required Skills, and Required Experience set out below, the successful candidate will have a proven aptitude for teaching at the undergraduate level, with demonstrated potential for making excellent contributions to teaching.

Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently, and will be for the duration of the contract, legally eligible to work in Canada.

Required Education:

The successful applicant must meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  •  Have a Canadian CPA designation and a Masters or PhD in Accounting and have adequate field experience in assurance services/auditing; OR
  • Have a Canadian CPA designation and PhD in Business/Accounting with an emphasis on assurance/auditing; OR
  • Have a Canadian CPA designation, coupled with at least five years of field experience in auditing
  • Candidates should outline their field experience and/or academic research in assurance services/auditing in their cover letters

Required Skills:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Human skills and technical competencies aligned with CPA professional competencies
  • Familiarity with CPA Competency map expectations
  • Familiarity with case writing methodology and critical thinking
  • Ability to utilize planning and risk assessments based on current experience in a public accounting role providing assurance services
  • Ability to introduce technology and data analytics in the context of assurance services
  • Understand the role of ethics and protecting the public interest in assurance services
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to respond to student enquiries and to grade assignments and exams in a timely manner
  • High level of comfort with interacting with students and colleagues using online modalities such as Google Meets and Kaltura
  • Ability to manage a course effectively using a Learning Management System
  • An ability to develop innovative and inclusive teaching strategies
  • An ability to communicate effectively in a multicultural and diverse community

Required Experience:

  •  Experience teaching in a university undergraduate commerce program will be considered an asset, especially if this experience includes teaching auditing courses. Candidates can demonstrate their competence by submitting course evaluations and/or formal peer evaluations

Priority will be given to an Internal Applicant who has taught any course for the University in three (3) different sessions in the past thirty-six (36) months, provided they meet the requirements for the position as outlined in the job posting.
