Job Description

At JSM Law, we have a team that specializes in Personal Injury Law.

As we are continuing to grow, we are looking to hire an experienced Personal Injury Law Clerk to join the team.

The ideal individual should have 3 years of personal injury experience with tort.

We offer a friendly working environment for the right candidate who is highly motivated, professional and is a self-starter. You must have the ability to multitask while paying attention to details.

The position requires the Law Clerk to handle a large number of files through the personal injury process.

***Knowledge of Accident Benefits is considered an asset.***

***Previous trial preparation experience would also be considered an asset. ***

Compensation is commensurate with experience.

JOB DUTIES

  • Draft pleadings, motion records, trial records, Statements of Claim, Mediation Memorandums, etc.

  • Identify and confirm limitation periods;

  • Understand finer details and nuances of law and procedures relating to court proceedings;

  • Identify issues that require the attention of the lawyer, including research, expert reports, deadlines;

  • Review files and summarize documents, including medical reports, or employment records.

  • Identify files ready for settlement discussions or appropriate to prepare for settlement conferences;

  • Experience in speaking with clients and meeting with clients to obtain updates, provide updates and gather information accurately;

  • Schedule a variety of events including mediations, Examinations for Discovery, settlement calls, etc.

  • Examinations for discovery (send Notices of Examination and communication to a client),

  • Expert Witness appointments (advise the client, prepare and send medical brief in a timely fashion),

  • Draft Affidavits of Documents, summarize discovery transcripts, monitors defendant productions;

  • Understand all major concepts relating to tort proceedings;

  • Draft mediation and pre-trial memos and prepare briefs;

  • Monitor defence medicals;

  • Assist with trial preparation including a summons to witnesses and date coordination with experts;

  • Assist in organizing files, sort and new filing, prepare file indexes;

  • Request and review medical documentation;

  • Communicate with adjusters and lawyers to coordinate events and facilitate the production of documents;

  • Communicate with medical clinics to obtain CNRs and fulfill undertaking requests;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

MINIMUM 3 plus years of relevant work experience;

Office Software Skills (preferable Clio, PC Law, etc);;

Ability to speak a second language is a definite asset;

Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to work well under pressure;

Excellent interpersonal and client service skills;

Confident and dependable, with strong initiative and ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented atmosphere;

Completion of Legal Assistant, Law Clerk or Paralegal Program is a definite asset.
