Community Bylaw Officers – 4 Positions
Summer Seasonal - May to September
Starting Wage - $ hrs per week) Weekends Required
Community Bylaw Officers preserve and maintain public peace by enforcing specific Municipal Bylaws utilizing a public education perspective of enforcement. This position supplements the work of Community Peace Officers and requires flexibility, discipline, professionalism, and good character. A Bylaw Officer must perform rationally and consistently within the law, given their limited powers and authorities.
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION
- Preserving and maintaining the public peace, by enforcing Municipal Bylaws (primarily focused on the downtown area and parking related enforcement.
- Investigating Municipal Bylaw complaints, and submitting reports, files, letters, and legal documents
- Performing lower risk enforcement and making frequent contact with the public including municipal violation tickets and public awareness
- Operating non-emergency equipment, including town vehicles, electronics, computers and radios
- Liaising and working effectively with law enforcement agencies, including the RCMP and working effectively with other departments of the Town of Sylvan Lake
- Attending meetings, if or when required
- Performing other assigned duties, functions, and responsibilities as directed by the Manager of Municipal Enforcement
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- A minimum age of 18 years
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
- Recommended One Year Post Secondary in Criminal Justice or related Law Enforcement studies and previous related experience in enforcement
- Successful completion of an RCMP based Vulnerable Sector Check to qualify and a more comprehensive RCMP Security Clearance to be accepted
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License with proof of acceptable Driving Record
- Must be resourceful and show initiative
- Demonstrated proficiency in writing, verbal and communication skills
- Proven knowledge of Canadian law, municipal bylaws and enforcement practices
- Ability to effectively manage difficult persons and high stress situations with ease
- Able to work both independently and cooperatively
- Must be able to work in a variety of conditions including flexible hours during evenings and weekends and extended periods outdoors
- Related enforcement or municipal experience would be an asset
