What You'll Do

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Language Manager is responsible for the successful development, delivery, and evaluation of Fort Nelson First Nation's (FNFN) language revitalization programs and strategies. This position oversees all aspects of language planning and delivery, including curriculum and resource development, instructor support, and collaboration with Elders and fluent speakers.

The Language Manager leads a team of staff and instructors responsible for community-based language programming, mentorship, and documentation efforts aimed at preserving and strengthening Dene and Cree language fluency across generations. The Manager is responsible for coordinating and implementing language projects, managing budgets, securing funding through grants and proposals, and ensuring compliance with funding requirements and FNFN policies.

This position plays a key leadership role in advancing the Nation's vision for language revitalization, supporting language learning opportunities for all ages, and ensuring programs are culturally grounded, community-led, and sustainable. Other related duties.

Valued Qualifications

Experience:

Minimum three (3) years' experience in program or project management, with a focus on language, education, or community development.

  • Minimum 1-year experience overseeing teams, crews, or support staff.
  • Experience developing and implementing curriculum, learning materials, or community-based programs.
  • Experience planning and managing budgets, projects and programs.

Knowledge:

  • Post-secondary education in Linguistics, Education, Indigenous Language Revitalization, or a related field; or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Dene and/or Cree languages and culture.
  • Experience working with First Nations (preferably Dene and/or Cree) heritage, language, traditional and/or cultural resources.

Skills:

  • Proficient computer skills such as MS Office Suite and/or Google Workspace products.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including proposal and report writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally at all levels.
  • Strong leadership and team building skills.

Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and prepare reports.
  • Ability to produce written documents, clearly organized and proper sentence construction.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple services and programs while adhering to reporting timelines.

Other (required):

  • Ability to work with any member of the community.
  • Compliance with BC Immunization program and TB Screening.
  • Satisfactory completion of a police information check (vulnerable sector).
  • Ability to provide own transportation to work.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and Drivers Abstract.

Optional (assets)

  • Ability to speak Dene and/or Cree.
  • Other certificates such as: WHMIS, First Aid, Food Safe Level 1.
  • Knowledge of FNFN governance and social or historical contexts impacting language revitalization.

Post-secondary education in First Nations Studies or Cultural Resource Management or other related field. Will consider an acceptable combination of education, training and relevant experience managing culture programs

Work Setting

Core business hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 35 hours per week; there is a requirement to work a flexible schedule for events and programs. Indoor working environment approximately 90% of the time, occasional outdoor work is required in all seasons. Travel is required within FNFN territory and may be required outside the territory on occasion. This position is overtime exempt.
