Job Description Summary

Under general supervision, develops, codes, test, and debugs new software or enhancements to existing software customers. Requires good understanding of business application. Works with technical staff to understand problems with software and resolve them. Resolves customer complaints with software and responds to suggestions for improvements and enhancements from customers. May assist in development of software user manuals. Demonstrates software. Note: If the incumbent is responsible for the development of software for internal use, please match to a position in the Application Development sub-family grouping.

Role Overview:

The
Train Validation Test Engineer (TE)
is responsible for executing
train-level functional and performance tests
to validate the correct integration and operation of all train subsystems. The role involves preparing test setups, performing static and dynamic tests, capturing data, and analyzing results to verify compliance with design and safety requirements. This position is hands-on, requiring close coordination with system, software, and commissioning teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review
    system requirements, test plans, and validation procedures
    for train-level testing.
  • Prepare
    test environments, instrumentation, and configurations
    for static and dynamic train tests.
  • Execute
    functional, integration, and performance tests
    on the full train or sub-train configurations.
  • Conduct
    interface testing
    between TCMS, Propulsion, Braking, Doors, HVAC, and other subsystems.
  • Capture and analyze
    test data, logs, and communication traces
    (MVB, WTB, Ethernet, CAN).
  • Identify, document, and report
    test anomalies / defects
    in defect tracking systems (e.g., JIRA).
  • Support
    software loading, configuration updates
    , and verification of train setup.
  • Work closely with
    TrainLab and System Integration teams
    to replicate and debug field issues.
  • Ensure all test activities comply with
    EN 50126 / EN 50128 / EN 50129
    railway standards and project processes.
  • Prepare and maintain
    test reports, validation evidence, and traceability records
    .
  • Support
    commissioning and acceptance testing
    during project validation and delivery phases.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in
    Electrical / Electronics / Instrumentation / Control / Computer / Mechatronics Engineering
    .
  • Minimum
    5 years of experience
    in
    train-level testing, validation, or integration
    within the
    railway or rolling stock domain
    .
  • Strong knowledge of
    TCMS architecture
    , communication protocols (
    MVB, WTB, ECN, CAN, Ethernet
    ), and subsystem interactions.
  • Experience using
    diagnostic and trace tools
    (Wireshark, CANalyzer, FipAnalyser, ECN Monitor).
  • Practical experience in
    train static and dynamic test execution
    , troubleshooting, and result interpretation.
  • Familiarity with
    test management tools
    (DOORS, Polarion) and
    defect tracking tools
    (JIRA, ALM).
  • Understanding of
    Safety Integrity Levels (SIL)
    and
    railway safety compliance
    principles.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and train network layouts.
  • Strong documentation, analytical, and coordination skills.

Good-to-Have / Preferred:

  • Experience with
    TrainLab / SIL / HIL
    validation platforms.
  • Exposure to
    CBTC / ETCS / ATO / ATS / OTS
    systems.
  • Working knowledge of
    instrumentation and data acquisition systems
    for on-train testing.
  • Knowledge of
    Python scripting or automation frameworks
    for data analysis or regression testing.
  • Experience with
    rail OEMs or system integrators
    (e.g., Alstom, Siemens, Hitachi, CAF, Bombardier).
  • ISTQB Certification or equivalent software testing qualification (preferred).
