Position: Design Technologist - Play Structures & Attractions
Shift: Permanent, Full-Time
Department: Architecture
Location: Richmond, BC, Canada
Reports to: Director, Design
Salary: 65,000 – 75,000 CAD
This role is also responsible for modeling and detailing the colour palettes of White Water's portfolio of rides and attractions, from initial concept through detailed design and procurement. The desired candidate is detail oriented and must be capable of working with clients to create pleasing color schemes that will suit customer needs and bring their dreams to life. The candidate will also work to develop improved colouring processes and standards within the company. This role requires a self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a time conscious office environment.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Conceptualize, design, and develop innovative and engaging layouts for interactive aquatic play structures in response to customer requests with the goal of improving user experience, operational performance and safety.
- Collaborate with our product development and creative teams to generate captivating theming designs that enhance the overall experience of our play structures, aligning with current trends and market demands.
- Develop and implement colour schemes that enhance the visual appeal and thematic coherence of our play structures, waterslides and towers.
- Continue the development of standard colour palettes to be applied to our waterslide portfolio, ensuring consistency and alignment with design standards.
- Work with the waterslide design team in the application of customer-specific colour combinations to align with existing park aesthetic, customer preference or customer IP.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product management, engineering, manufacturing, and marketing to ensure design feasibility and market readiness.
- Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and materials to continuously improve and modernize our product offerings.
- Lead and mentor junior designers, providing guidance and support in design processes and techniques.
- Conduct regular design reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure the highest quality standards are maintained.
- Assist in the development of design guidelines and standards to streamline the design process and maintain brand coherence across all products.
- Support Project services in communication of design intent to project designers and engineers to ensure alignment between proposed concept and manufactured intent, including but not limited to; waterslide colours, waterslide theming and effects, tower theming, and interactive toys and structures.
- Colouring existing slide and slide tower models to coincide with customer colour choices.
- Creating slide reference packages for clients with the appropriate colour callouts.
- Photoshopping of designs and paint details onto the slides and slide towers as necessary.
- Proactively following production schedules, timelines, and processes.
- Respect for people with communication, consideration, and cooperation.
- Participating in and, where applicable leading, department training.
- Executing responsibilities according to lawful and ethical standards.
- Responsible for own safety - Ensuring best practices are followed.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Product design or related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in industrial design, with a focus on aquatic play or amusement park industry preferred.
- Graphic Design or 3D Animation certification is an asset.
- Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD, as well as 3D visualization applications (3DMax, Sketchup, Rhino, Maya, Keyshot, Lumion, Unreal)
- Strong portfolio demonstrating creative and innovative design solutions, with a focus on aquatic play structures.
- Proven track record of leading design projects from concept to completion, with a strong portfolio showcasing innovative and impactful design solutions.
- In-depth knowledge of color theory, materials, manufacturing processes, and safety standards relevant to aquatic play structures.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and collaboration skills, Proven track record of leading design projects from concept to completion, with a strong portfolio showcasing innovative and impactful design solutions.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and mentor junior team members.
