Job Summary: The Men's Hockey Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in all aspects of operating a competitive varsity men's hockey program. This role contributes to athlete development, recruitment, game preparation, and program administration while fostering a positive, inclusive, and academically focused student-athlete experience. The Assistant Coach plays a key role in maintaining competitive excellence and upholding institutional and conference standards.

Responsibilities/accountabilities:

Program Management

  • Support the implementation of the program annual plan.
  • Lead role in team administrative responsibilities (i.e team paperwork, registrations, waivers and game film analysis
  • Supports the coordination of team travel and logistical team components (in consultation with the Athletic Department)
  • Support the organization of team related activities, including games, training camps, practice sessions and other team functions
  • Provide assistance to players with their academics through the advice of the athletic advisor in the department.
  • Support Program advisor with USport & OUA compliance and university regulations
  • Participate in fundraising, alumni engagement, and community outreach initiatives as required

Coaching & Athlete Development

  • Assist with planning and delivering on-ice and off-ice training sessions, including skill development, systems implementation, and tactical preparation
  • Provide position-specific instruction and individual player development plans
  • Support game-day preparation, bench management, video analysis, and post-game evaluation
  • Promote a culture of accountability, sportsmanship, and competitive excellence
  • Support annual program objectives which will motivate athletes to strive for their best potential performances.
  • Reinforces positive culture forstudent-athletes to the policies and regulations of the University, Varsity Athletics, OUA and USPORTS

Recruitment

  • Working in full collaboration with the HC in creating the full annual national recruiting strategy to attract the best student athletes to the program.
  • Assist in identifying, evaluating, and recruiting prospective student-athletes in accordance with U SPORTS, OUA, and institutional policies
  • Attend showcases, games, and camps as assigned
  • Support communication with recruits and agents throughout the recruitment process
  • Contact and liaise with potential recruits according to OUA, USPORTS and Ontario Tech rules and regulations.
  • Foster relationships with associations, clubs and organizations where student athletes would be recruited from.
  • Communicate and liaise with the Athletic Department regarding student athletes who are being recruited or have committed to the university.

REVENUE GENERATION:

  • Collaborate with the athletic department operational unit and University Advancement to develop an annual plan to increase team and department donations and sponsorships.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS:

  • Collaborate with Advancement to grow and foster alumni through events, communication and fundraising.
  • Promote the program and university in general through conducting and participating in events, coaching clinics and functions with local sport organizations.
  • Represent the men's hockey program professionally at university and external events

Required Qualifications:

  • Previous coaching or high-level playing experience in hockey
  • Strong knowledge of hockey systems, skill development, and player evaluation
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during the competitive season
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and student-athlete development
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of academic system at the University level
  • Knowledge of OUA/USPORT associations

Required Skills:

  • Leadership skills and strong ability to recruit student athletes
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and efficiently
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills. Computer skills are an asset
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community

Required Education:

  • Undergraduate Bachelor degree or equivalent related experience to coaching is required
  • Minimum Coaching Certification NCCP Level I, or equivalent
  • Training and/or experience may be substituted for formal academic training at the discretion of the University.
  • An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered
  • Verification of Academic credentials may be required

Required Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year coaching experience preferably Post-secondary varsity or junior hockey coaching experience
  • Playing experience preferably at the University level at minimum
  • Experience with video analysis platforms and performance technology
  • Understanding of U SPORTS and OUA rules and recruiting standards
  • A proven record of integrity, high principles, and demonstrated skill in developing / motivating student-athletes both academically and athletically
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment, get along and work well with members of the department, supervisors and other employees of the university
