JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a dynamic Mechanical Design Engineers to support the design and production of custom steering systems and products for the marine industry. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop mechanical, hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems and products from inception through to production and commission. This role will suit a driven individual who demands excellence and is able to collaborate with others to achieve results in a timely and cost-effective manner.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design custom steering systems utilizing JEL stand mechanical and
    hydraulic

products as well custom engineered components to meet the customer's system specifications.
- Work on multiple projects with different timelines
- Complete 2D AutoCAD and 3D Solidworks drawings and models, applying experience in effective dimensioning and tolerances for high quality and cost-effective manufacture.
- Write and compile technical documentation such as system specifications, technical descriptions, operation instruction and machining/assembly instructions.
- Gather initial requirements for new projects, develop timelines with partners and deliver practical, cost-effective solutions for current and future markets
- Completing and documenting mechanical engineering calculations relating to material properties, thermal, stress, pressure vessels and fatigue analysis.
- Interface with production and machine shop staff as well as subcontractors and suppliers, applying manufacturing engineering principles to ensure efficiency and quality of manufactured and purchased products and systems.
- Provide support and system troubleshooting assistance to JEL product service staff as required to meet customer service needs.
- Complete required documentation packages and communicate with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with maritime rules and regulations.
- Contribute to the culture of engineering excellence with respect to improvement of quality of system design, product design, productivity and cost reduction measures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional qualification as a ships engineer, marine technician, red seal or equivalent
  • Practical mechanical and/or electrical work experience required
  • Marine industry experience, such as shipbuilding and/or ship repair
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills; French an asset
  • Valid passport and willing to travel domestically and internationally on short notice
  • Comfortable dealing with front-line technical customers
  • Able to effectively and efficiently use Microsoft Office Suite, as well as Adobe
  • Electrical data processing and CRM software experience or willing to learn

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • A Mechanical
     
    or Mechatronics Engineering degree/diploma

Experience and Competencies:

  • 2+ years' experience of producing quality mechanical system designs, drawings and documentation.
  • Experience with Classification Societies an asset
  • Manufacturing experience in a high-mix, low-volume environment
  • oExperience with casting, machining and assembly processes including direct interaction with machine shop staff.
  • A broad-based understanding of electrical, mechanical and electro-hydraulic systems.
  • Proficiency with 2D AutoCAD and 3D Solidworks software.
  • Excellent Technical Communication in English, verbal and written.
