Montreal, Quebec, Canada Conseil SYM Consulting Full time

Company Description

SYM Consulting works collaboratively with Indigenous Nations, governments, and the private sector to identify and enhance opportunities for communities on the path toward self-governance and harmonious development.

Our mission is to design and implement sustainable development strategies that empower Indigenous communities, firmly rooted in their environmental, social, and cultural values. We work across projects in conservation, environmental and natural resource governance, infrastructure, and economic development, all with the goal of building stronger, more resilient communities.

Role Description

The Researcher/Analyst will support SYM Consulting's team in planning and conducting research and engagement activities with Indigenous communities and partners. This role focused on organizing, analyzing, and synthesizing data in the context of research related to the impacts of large infrastructure projects on established Constitutional Rights as well as the planning and coordination of community-based research activities.

The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to synthesize qualitative and quantitative data into clear, actionable insights. The ideal candidate is collaborative, curious, and committed to community-based, participatory approaches to research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with community representatives and project teams to plan and implement data-gathering activities, including workshops, group interviews, individual interviews, focus groups, and field visits.
  • Coordinate research logistics, including note-takers, facilitators, and translators where required.
  • Compile and organize data using standard data management techniques and software.
  • Contribute to writing field reports, data summaries, and final project reports.
  • Support the organization of validation sessions with community representatives.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations of research findings for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support other research or coordination tasks as required by the project team.

Qualifications

  • At minimum a Master's degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Environmental Studies, Geography, Indigenous Studies, Sociology, Political Science, or other Applied Social Science).
  • Strong written communication and report-writing skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applied social science methods and community-based research approaches.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a virtual team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or data organization software.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
  • Knowledge of French is an asset.

Additional Information

  • Employment Type: Full-time, remote.
  • Work Environment: The bulk of the work (approximately 70–80%) involves desktop-based research, analysis, and writing. Travel to Indigenous communities and partner locations for workshops, field visits, or validation sessions may occur occasionally (approximately 20–30% of the time), depending on project needs.
  • Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience.
  • Priority will be given to First Nations, Inuit and Métis applicants.
