To be Canada's most trusted news source, we must meet our audience in the moments that matter, helping them make sense of their world in real time. CBC News is looking for an exceptional leader who can drive live and daily news coverage, and build a culture of collaboration.

In this role, you support a team of editorial leaders and journalists responsible for weekday news programming across digital, streaming, CBC News Network, CBC Radio One and CBC Television. You help break the latest national and international stories as they unfold, ensuring a seamless experience for audiences whenever and wherever they want our best-in-class journalism.

You are the first stop for the team around legal issues and questions involving the CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices, ensuring your team is providing fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and immediate coverage.

You know how to build a respectful culture where teams are motivated to support each other, producing impactful journalism that prioritizes live and breaking news that resonates with all Canadians. You are a collaborator who can wear many hats, equally adept at pivoting for live programming as you are at evolving workflows and supporting staff under pressure. You expertly navigate daily digital, streaming, broadcast and social platforms, and help to prioritize
the relentless demands for teams who deliver the highest quality audio, video and text coverage. You'll work with colleagues across the CBC News division, sharing both content and expertise across platforms and programs.

You support executive producers, senior producers and assignment leaders in managing budgets, resource allocation and ensuring the mental and physical well-being of your teams is front-and-centre.

You work closely with other managing editors to ensure CBC News delivers on its mission to provide seamless live, breaking and daily coverage 24/7.

What you'll be doing:

As a top-tier leader, you'll be front and centre in achieving the CBC News mission by driving journalism, innovation and connection. In this role, you'll:

Lead with Impact: Bring your A-game everyday, guiding and inspiring a talented team of journalists and directing editorial and audience growth strategy on all platforms. In collaboration with the Head of Live and Daily News, Managing Editors, and Executive and Senior Producers for programming teams, you oversee the live and daily coverage of national and international stories and major events.

Champion Audience Growth: Focus editorial decisions on expanding our reach, particularly to new and younger news consumers, and to deepen our engagement with all Canadians. You understand the pulse of Canadian audiences and their habits, and translate insights and data into actionable content strategies for all platforms.

Mentor & Develop: Provide strong editorial leadership, offering clear direction, constructive feedback, and growth opportunities to a large team of journalists. You cultivate a high-performing, collaborative, and respectful work culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute. You ensure your team has the skills, tools and training to adapt quickly, and provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to support them through rapid change.

Foster Authentic Storytelling: Champion content that truly reflects the richness and diversity of perspectives, ideas, and experiences in Canada. You inspire your team to think inclusively, always asking whose voice is missing and you work diligently to close that gap. You collaborate with journalistic leaders across CBC News, ensuring our daily coverage reflects the stories and issues that help Canadians make sense of their world.

Uphold Journalistic Excellence: Ensure all content adheres to CBC's rigorous Journalistic Standards and Practices, navigating complex ethical and legal considerations with grace and precision.

Resource Management: Manage budgets, allocate resources effectively, and
coordinate technical and production requirements for coverage.

Innovate & Strategize: Demonstrate daily the role of a public broadcaster in a media landscape proliferated with misinformation, disinformation and rapidly evolving technologies. Verification is a core value. You lean into data, and use it to drive audience-focused strategies for your team. You translate big ideas into tangible actions.

We are looking for someone who:

● Has at least eight to 10 years of recent, significant leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment, particularly in roles involving breaking news, live programming and overseeing large teams in a unionized environment.

● Experience with risk assessment and management is a requirement.

● Demonstrates exceptional critical thinking, news judgement and a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues in journalism.

● Has demonstrated experience in implementing live and breaking news coverage plans across streaming, digital and broadcast platforms, from the initial alert to sustained coverage as the story evolves.

● Is an astute strategist, capable of translating audience insights and data into effective content decisions and programming results that meet the evolving needs of Canadian news consumers.

● Possesses proven ability to find solutions to a variety of technical, resource and operational issues, to make decisions to tight deadlines; and to handle multiple priorities while juggling tasks and/or projects.

● Has strong coaching and mentorship skills, with a track record of recruiting and developing talent and fostering a positive, inclusive, and equitable work environment.

● Is comfortable navigating rapid change, troubleshooting complex situations, and making swift decisions under pressure.

● Brings a deep and nuanced understanding of national and international politics, world events, geography, and history, coupled with strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.

● Exhibits stellar communication and collaboration skills, essential for working across diverse teams and regions.

● Has a university degree or equivalent professional experience.

● Is prepared and able to work a flexible schedule on short notice, including early mornings, nights and holidays to respond to the demands of a live programming cycle.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Toronto. You are expected to be on-site most days, however there is opportunity for hybrid work on occasion.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
