Statistical Ecologist

This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

Location - This position offers a flexible work arrangement, allowing for a combination of remote and in-office work (in Edmonton or Calgary) based on work preferences. Preference for schedule will be discussed during the recruitment process.

The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) is dedicated to tracking changes in biodiversity across the entirety of Alberta, now and in the future, and provides the public with the data, knowledge, and tools to make informed decisions about the state of the environment.

The Statistical Ecologist works in ABMI's Science Centre and is primarily responsible for analyzing data to support environmental management throughout Alberta. This position will also contribute to the advancement of analytical and study design approaches, dissemination of information through multiple streams, and participation in collaborative projects.

The Faculty of Science is internationally recognized for excellence in research and education. Through pioneering discovery and innovation, the faculty addresses global challenges across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, computing science, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences. The Statistical Ecologist leads and executes statistical design, modeling, analysis, and publication activities that advance ABMI's scientific mission. Working both independently and collaboratively, this role contributes to high-quality biodiversity science and supports data-driven decision-making.

• Develop, test, and implement biodiversity metrics and models for species, habitat, and landscape data.
• Provide leadership in statistical and analytical methods, ensuring data quality and continuous improvement of biodiversity metrics.
• Integrate ABMI data with external datasets, conduct model validation, and ensure robust quality assurance.
• Collaborate on research design, grant proposals, and strategic research planning.
• Mentor students and research assistants and liaise with academic, government, and industry partners.
• Lead or contribute to scientific publications, reports, and presentations for internal and external audiences.

Minimum:

• Bachelor's degree in statistics, ecology or a related natural resource management field, MSc preferred.
• More than 3 years of working experience with R and large data sets through parallel computing.
• More than 3 years of working experience in the field of ecological statistics with a background in resource management.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, experience working with research teams, and strong analytical ability.

Preferred:

• Thorough understanding of statistical theory and application.
• A proven record of developing and testing models to analyze complex sample designs and multivariate ecological data.
• Experience in developing research and monitoring study design.
• Programming experience to create simulations that allow testing of various sampling designs and statistical models.
• Experience with managing complex data flows and working with advanced data management systems as part of an integrated team.
• Basic GIS ability.
• Experience in modeling species relationships to habitats and response to land change.
• Experience with Alberta ecosystems.
• Experience with a broad diversity of taxa.
• Research experience in ecology or associated discipline
• Experience working on multidisciplinary teams
