Position Overview
We are seeking experienced Class 1 and Class 3 Truck Operators to support winter programs across Alberta. This role is focused on operating water trucks and tandem gravel/dump trucks in winter construction, access, and maintenance environments.
Successful candidates will be skilled operators capable of working with both newer and older equipment, identifying mechanical deficiencies, and adapting driving and hauling techniques to winter road, ice, and site conditions.
This position requires operators who are reliable, mechanically aware, safety-focused, and comfortable working independently in cold, remote, and fast-changing winter environments.
Work Location & Schedule
- Alberta winter operations (site-based)
- Camp accommodations provided for out-of-town assignments
Rotation Options
- 12-hour scheduled workdays
- Day or night shifts depending on program requirements
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive hourly wages based on licence class, equipment, and experience
- Overtime paid after 10 hours per day or 44 hours per week
- Statutory holiday pay: 9.6%
- Steady winter program work with potential transition to year-round roles
- Camp accommodations while on shift

Key Responsibilities
Truck Operation
- Safely operate water trucks and tandem gravel/dump trucks in winter conditions
- Haul gravel, snow, ice, and other materials to support winter programs
- Support freeze-in, access construction, road maintenance, and site servicing
- Adjust driving techniques for ice roads, winter access, poor visibility, and changing conditions
- Load, haul, and dump material safely and efficiently in confined and active worksites
Inspections & Equipment Care
- Complete daily pre-use, post-use, and operational inspections
- Monitor vehicle performance and identify mechanical or operational deficiencies
- Accurately report defects, maintenance concerns, and required repairs
- Maintain cleanliness, readiness, and proper operation of assigned trucks
- Demonstrate mechanical awareness when operating older and newer equipment
Safety & Field Participation
- Actively participate in hazard assessments, FLHAs, toolbox talks, and safety meetings
- Identify hazards related to winter driving, traffic, ice, loading areas, and site conditions
- Follow all company policies, client requirements, and Alberta OH&S regulations
- Complete required safety and operational documentation accurately and on time
- Exercise stop-work authority when conditions are unsafe
Communication & Teamwork
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatch, and site personnel
- Coordinate hauling and watering activities with operators and ground crews
- Work independently while supporting overall site operations
- Represent Al's Contracting professionally on all worksites
Required Qualifications
- Valid Class 1 or Class 3 Driver's Licence with air brakes
- Clean commercial driver's abstract
- Previous experience operating:
- Water trucks
- Tandem gravel / dump trucks
- Winter or industrial hauling environments
- Strong understanding of winter driving, site access, and material handling
- Mechanically inclined with the ability to identify equipment deficiencies
- Ability to work outdoors in cold, remote conditions and variable weather
Valid safety certifications (required):
- H2S Alive
- Ground Disturbance Level 2
- Standard First Aid (CPR)
- CSTS 2020
- Ability to successfully complete pre-employment drug & alcohol testing
