We are looking for a champion of all things safety to fill the role of Director, Safety. In this position, you will lead a team of like-minded individuals championing health and safety every day ensuring we are continually improving our overall health and safety results across all operations of Medavie Health Services (MHS).
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, and as a member of the Management Team, you will work directly with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to strengthen safety culture, enhance organizational resilience and ensure regulatory compliance. A key focus of this position is to build, coach and empower a collaborative team working alongside our operational teams across Canada to implement and maintain consistent, high-quality safety practices across the organization including developing system-wide policies and driving a proactive safety culture grounded in evidence-based practice.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Culture Development
• Develop, implement, and evaluate the organization's safety strategy aligned with corporate priorities and regulatory requirements.
• Oversee national safety initiatives and ensure consistent application across all regions.
• Lead the development of annual safety plans and performance dashboards for executive review.
• Build and lead a collaborative, high-performing team of safety business partners who work closely with operations and external partners to influence behaviours, advance safety performance and support frontline leadership.
• Foster a culture where safety, including psychological safety, is integrated into everyday activities, decision-making and operational planning.
• Model and reinforce accountability, responsibility, and organizational values across the team.
Operational & Program Oversight
• Direct occupational health & safety programs, including hazard identification, workplace inspections, WHMIS, violence prevention, ergonomics, and incident investigations.
• Oversee internal communications related to safety and emergency preparedness.
Compliance and Risk Mitigation
• Prepare, update and oversee implementation of safety policies, procedures and operational standards.
• Ensure compliance with federal and provincial safety laws including the applicable provincial Occupational Health & Safety Acts, Worker Compensation Boards, regulations, codes and accreditation standards.
• Establish and monitor risk mitigation policies aimed at reducing liability linked to employee injuries, vehicle incidents and public safety issues.
• Lead development of instructional, operational and safety manuals for operations leaders and health and safety specialist.
Incident Management & Prevention
• Review incident trends, root-cause analyses, and leading indicators to reduce injuries and improve safety outcomes.
• Lead organizational learning following serious incidents, critical events, and occupational injuries.
• Manage metrics, reporting, and compliance tracking for internal and external stakeholders.
• Provide guidance on emergency preparedness, incident management and communicable disease response.
• Support managers and safety business partners with tools, coaching and resources to ensure incidents are addressed consistently and proactively.
People Leadership
• Lead, mentor, and support a national team of safety specialists, advisors, and coordinators.
• Foster professional development and build organizational safety capacity through training and education.
As the Director, Safety, you will have a strong educational background in Safety, Wellness, and Risk Management. A Bachelor's degree in occupational health & safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is required (Master's degree preferred). You will also have:
• CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent professional designation or willing to obtain.
• Minimum 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in health and safety and risk management over multiple provinces, within a unionized healthcare organization.
• Strong knowledge of Canadian OHS legislation and emergency preparedness frameworks across multiple provinces.
• Formal training or extensive experience in incident investigations including root cause analyst (ie. HFMEA).
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including report preparation and presentation delivery including change management experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office.
• Demonstrated excellence in communication, external parter relations, customer service and team building with the ability to initiate and model positive change.
• Expert time management skills to balance and coordinate effort across multiple, concurrent activities.
• Travel is required.
• Bilingualism would be considered an asset.
The salary range for this position is $91,000-$114,000 annually.
