Participate in staff training, scheduling and evaluation. Receive and respond to staff and client requests. Assume full supervisor responsibilities in the absence of Department Manager.
Responsible for ensuring prompt and courteous customer service. Ensure that standards for technical efficiency, quality control, Ministry of Health and other government regulations are met. Status: Permanent, Full Time

- Ensure that workflow is maintained by warranting work is delivered quickly and accurately to appropriate clinical departments, and recommending changes to maintain high level of productivity
- Assist with the development and implementation of Specimen Processing related policies and procedures
- identify potential process improvements within the Department and assist with implementation and training as required.
- Responsible for assigning staff appropriately to ensure adequate bench coverage within the Specimen Processing Department during staff absence, shift change and lunch periods
- Assume responsibility of the Department Manager during vacation time and other absences as required.
- Provide assistance to employees as required, on interpretation of policies and procedures
- Assist with scanner (imaging) problems and maintenance, as required
- assist with completing maintenance and repair forms for various departmental equipment when necessary
- Sort and/or label specimens received matching to the documentation provided
- Prioritize time sensitive specimens upon receipt.
- Separate specimens to correct vials according to barcodes and type of test and ensure to place all specimens in appropriate area for testing and/or shipment to an outside laboratory
- Data enter and process client work as required
- Prepare specimens and documentation for reference testing
- Ensure type of specimen is correct for specified test and sent to correct Reference Laboratory
- Follow special procedure for packaging and shipping infectious material set by the company, MOH and other governing bodies
- assist with reference bench problem solving on outstanding reference results
- Liaise with various departments for any problems and inquiries
- Report unresolved issues to the Department Manager, Specimen Processing
- Assist in training and orientation of staff
- Participate in safety programs and activities such as training, communication, inspection, and investigation of general safety promotions
- Ensure each employee receives proper instruction and safety training for each job assigned, prior to implementation as required
- Perform routine equipment maintenance following documented procedures, as required
- Document all maintenance performed, including minor troubleshooting following manufacturer's instructions
- Observe and report all malfunctions of equipment and maintain all required logbooks for routine equipment
- Strong leadership qualities
- High school diploma
- Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent previous experience.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in data entry and verification of medical requests.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team centered environment.
- Excellent sense of organization and demonstrated autonomy
- Ease of working in a changing and constantly evolving environment
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Availability to work overtime as needed
- MLPAO Certification
