The Ministry of Forestry and Parks supports the well-being of Albertans through sustainable development and management of Alberta's lands, forests, and parks. The ministry addresses land management, access, compliance, and enforcement, appeals and dispute resolution with respect to public lands in Alberta. It provides Albertans and visitors with opportunities to explore unique natural landscapes, engage in nature-based experiences and outdoor recreational activities.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Lands Manager, the Lands Team Lead is responsible for providing leadership and direction to a multidisciplinary team consisting of professionals, technical specialists and technologists. This role oversees the administration of approvals, licenses, permits, disposition management and monitoring programs for activities regulated under the Public Lands Act and Public Lands Administrative Regulation.

The Lands Team Lead must have working knowledge of related legislation, including the Provincial Parks Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act, and Forests Act. Operating within this legislative and regulatory framework, the Team Lead is accountable for implementing provincial and regional policies, procedures and directives as well as defending departmental decisions and actions. The position ensures that approval processes are delivered in a timely, accurate and integrated manner across multiple resource sectors including forestry, water, range, land use and environmental management.

Key responsibilities (Include but not limited to):

  • Implement provincial and regional land management policies, procedures, and guidelines to support consistent and effective regulatory practices.
  • Review and approve land use activities under delegated authority, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, environmental standards, and strategic plans.
  • Support and implement the Land Management Inspection Program (LMIP) to monitor industry compliance with approval conditions, legislation, and policy.
  • Supervise and mentor staff, including professionals, technical specialists, and technologists, to ensure consistent, high-quality decision-making and operational performance.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with internal departments, external stakeholders, industry representatives, municipalities, and the public to support integrated land and resource management.
  • Represent the department in defending program decisions and contribute to the development and implementation of regional and provincial initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • A completed university degree in a related field (Environmental Science, Forestry or other Natural Resource Program is preferred).
  • Minimum 6 years of related experience with the principles and practices of integrated land management.

Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of one year of education for one year of experience or vice versa.

Assets:

  • Experience with applicable legislation, regulations, and guidelines (i.e. Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act, Mines and Minerals Act, Public Lands Act, Provincial Parks Act and Forests Act) and related administrative procedures applicable to the delivery of the land management programs.
  • A working knowledge of Integrated Land Management policy, legislation and administration is also required.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Experience in operating ATVs and 4x4 trucks in an off-highway capacity.
