JOB SUMMARY

The Tree Preservation position is responsible for assisting with the administration and enforcement of the City's regulatory By-laws pertaining to Tree Preservation.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Tree Preservation Technician and Public Realm Coordinator, this position will provide support with the following:

  • Review Tree Assessment and Preservation Plans (TAPP) for completeness
  • Visit sites to ensure trees are properly recorded in reports (size, location, species, etc.)
  • Inspect, document and perform assessments of development activities on trees
  • Inspect tree preservation zone (TPZ) works to confirm compliance with City of Markham standards
  • Review of permit conditions for compliance and tree planting
  • Notify residents by email, mail or via site visit to address non-compliance to permit conditions
  • Work with residents/contractors to ensure tree protection/planting is completed properly
  • Assist with Active Citizen Requests (ACR) involving private trees
  • Assisting the Tree Preservation Technician in the office and in field, with complaints, and site investigation as well as general inspection of trees related to, building permits, pool enclosures, residential grading/servicing applications and by-law infractions.
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

    • All applicants must be enrolled full time in a 2 or 3 year post-secondary Forestry, Urban Forestry Arboriculture program or a related field
  • Submission and maintenance of a valid Ontario Class G Driver's License. As a condition of employment you will be required to provide and maintain a satisfactory driver's abstract (no demerit points plus no more than 2 infractions - maximum of one moving and one non-moving conviction.
  • Submission and maintenance of a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
  • Technical skills involving use of DBH Tape, measuring and use of other forestry tools to perform the role
  • Use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and other related applications
  • Knowledge of GIS applications is an asset
  • Excellent customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diverse general population
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Good decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Good conflict resolution skills
  • An excellent attendance record is essential
  • Professional and neat appearances at all times
  • Acts in a professional manner when engaging with internal and external stakeholders

Note: Work is performed in varying weather conditions, successful applicants will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), green patch work boots and rain gear as required.
