The Opportunity:

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is seeking a highly motivated team leader to join its team as a Claims Supervisor, Wellness.

In this role, you will supervise, counsel, evaluate and train Case Management Coordination employees. Additionally you will provide guidance and advice to Service members regarding the interpretation and application of Occupational and Non-Occupational Absence & Claims procedures, policies and programs, including accommodations.

Duties and Responsibilities

As the Claims Supervisor you will:

  • Be responsible for the supervision, evaluation and training of employees within the Claims section.
  • Coordinate and assign regular claims workflow as well as ad-hoc requests to the appropriate Case Management Coordinator or administrative staff.
  • Adjudicate first level issues that have been escalated from internal or external stakeholders, including Unit Commanders, Supervisors, or members.
  • Oversee the timely and proper documentation of Case Management Coordination activities, including proper use of the Parklane (or similar) platform, proper communication of claims status and decisions to stakeholders, and appropriate management of review dates i.e. task based work flow within individual caseloads.
  • Coordinate and lead regular team meetings to ensure ongoing clarity of roles, directions, program updates or changes, relevant legislation, or other job-specific information.
  • Coordinate regular one on one meetings with Case Management Coordinators and administrative staff to maintain ongoing contact and two-way communication on an ongoing basis.
  • Responsible for the proper administration and processing of:
  • Sick Leave Claims
  • WSIB Claims
  • Attendance Management Exemption Reviews
  • Daily oversight of pre-placement medical process
  • Approval of any incoming transfer / external application clearances received from Talent Acquisition or similar.
  • Monitor and provide feedback to Case Management Coordinator team with regards to ongoing review dates, caseload health and proper system (Parklane) management.
  • Assist with ongoing program evaluation and the development of new or improved processes or tools to support continuous improvement in claims management operations.
  • Review and assess changes to procedures, legislation and disclosures; implement generic programs, policies and procedures.
  • Perform typical duties inherent to the position.

Education/Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in Health Sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences, Human Resources, Occupational Health or Disability Management, or a related field or an approved equivalency
  • 3 years of recent work experience, of which one includes being at a supervisory level dealing with claims and benefit administration duties, ideally within a police or public sector environment.
  • CDMP, CRTWC, CEBS and/or CHRP designation is an asset.

Skills/Competencies:

  • Must have claims and benefit administration knowledge/experience gained, preferably, within a public sector environment.
  • Must possess excellent inter-personal, written and verbal communication skills combined with superior organizational and customer service skills.
  • Excellent leadership and motivational skills with the ability to resolve issues escalated from staff.
  • Must have working knowledge of Parklane, TRMS and Microsoft Suite of Tools.
  • Knowledge of current legislation and prevailing issues in the field of Occupational Health and Safety, Workplace Safety and Insurance, and Schedule 2 employer claims administration.
  • Sound understanding and knowledge of Service rules, policies and procedures.

Probation Period:

Six (6) Months
