Primary Duties And Description
The Wellness Facilitator provides addiction and mental health promotion and prevention services to children, youth, and families within the Catholic school system. Working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, this role designs and delivers developmentally appropriate, evidence-based programming aligned with the objectives of the Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) initiative and the Catholic School Division.

Programming is delivered in both school and community settings and includes large and small group formats. The focus is on increasing mental health knowledge, building life skills, and fostering the abilities of individuals to strengthen their own mental wellness. In addition, the Wellness Facilitator supports school staff, parents, and community members who work with children and youth to enhance their understanding and competencies related to mental health and wellness.

The successful candidate will be housed in one school but is expected to provide services across three of the nine Catholic schools within the division, ensuring programming and support is accessible and consistent

where needed.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Building and maintaining strong, supportive relationships with students, staff, families, and community

partners.

  • Delivering programming and support in alignment with Catholic Division Values and MHCB goals and principles.
  • Responding to the emergent mental health and wellness needs of the school community and adapting programming accordingly—within the scope of the MHCB mandate.
  • Participating in evaluation activities, including data collection for Recovery Alberta (formerly Alberta Health Services).
  • Identifying individuals in need of specialized services and supporting referrals to appropriate addiction and mental health resources.
  • Ensuring all documentation complies with the Health Information Act (HIA), the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP), and Recovery Alberta policies.

Additional Expectations

  • Wellness Facilitators are required to work all professional development (PD) days throughout the school year.
  • A commitment of 25 workdays during the summer months is expected, which will include programming, planning, community engagement, and professional development.
  • This position includes a physical component, working outside in the summer, and lifting and carrying materials or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds as part of program setup and delivery.

Qualifications And Relational Skills

  • A Diploma or Degree in a Health or Social Sciences field (e.g., Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Psychology, Addictions, Sociology or Psychology).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in addiction and mental health or a related health/human services role (practicum experience may be considered).
  • Strong knowledge of addiction and mental health issues, including developmental and psychosocial needs of children, youth, and families.
  • Skilled in program delivery, public speaking, and group facilitation.
  • Demonstrated ability to build supportive, respectful relationships with young people and adults.
  • Effective time management, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Clear understanding and application of personal and professional boundaries.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience in community engagement, collaboration, and networking.
  • Awareness of local community resources and systems. Competent in using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Canva, and Social Media tools.
  • Resilient, self-reflective, and committed to ongoing professional growth.
  • ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and First Aid with CPR certification are

considered strong assets, though not mandatory.

Additional Requirements

  • Current Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance.
  • Intervention Record Check from Alberta Children's Services.
  • Proof of Education (e.g., Diploma or Degree in a relevant field).
  • Proof of Licensure or Registration with the appropriate Alberta Regulatory College, where applicable. Regulated Health Professionals must provide a valid practice permit before beginning employment.
  • Other regulated professionals may be required to submit additional documentation.
