The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA), under the authority of the Emergency Management Act, leads the coordination and co-operation of all organizations involved in emergencies and disasters. This includes emergency and disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery.
The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) is accountable and responsible to the GoA, to Albertans, to their communities, and to industry for the protection of people, their property, and the environment from the effects of emergency events. Alberta relies on a decentralized "system" for managing the various types of emergency events that occur every year. The AEMA accomplishes its objectives by leading the co-ordination, collaboration and co-operation between all entities involved in prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery activities within this diverse system.

*Role Responsibilities*
The Watch Station/Provincial Duty Officer (PDO) provides the 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operational capability for the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre (PECC) that monitors, analyzes and provides recommendations with regards to hazards or emergencies that have impacts or potential impacts on Alberta community functions, Alberta and/or Albertans. The PDO provides situational awareness for executive decision-makers and elected officials. The Watch Station/PDO is the first point of contact for emergencies or disasters that are impacting the Government of Alberta (GoA), municipalities, First Nations, Metis Settlements or federal partners and that require a GoA response
Responsibilities Include
- Respond to inquiries that are related to requests for information, advice on emergency techniques, and requests for assistance
- Build and maintain situational awareness of potential and ongoing public safety emergencies or disasters that impact Alberta and/or Albertans
- Disseminate information on potential or ongoing emergency or disasters that may require a GoA response activities
- Support to the PECC staff during a PECC elevation of Level 2 or higher and other Provincial Operations Units and lines of work
- Ensuring readiness of the PECC and Watch Station, including the business continuity actions to maintain these critical services
- Research, write and edit material for publication and distribution to increase awareness and inform decision making
- Contribute to the maintenance and readiness of the PECC, alternate PECC, and MESA

Qualifications
Required:
University degree in a related field, no experience required; or equivalent as described
Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
For Example
Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 3 years of experience
Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 2 years of experience
Related minimum 4 years of experience
The Successful Candidate MUST Also Have
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the four pillars of emergency management
- Thorough knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS)
- Intermediate to Advanced MS Office skills and social media platforms
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
- A driver's license and clear abstract is required
- Air Brake program completion and you must have or be willing to obtain this qualification
Assets
- Understanding of GoA and AEMA emergency planning
- Familiarity with applicable legislation, regulations, and guidelines
