Overview
Athletics Canada (AC) is the national sport organization for track and field, cross country, road, mountain, ultra and trail running. Our purpose is to support High Performance (HP) athletics excellence at the world level, engage participation and provide leadership in developmental athletics. AC is a not-for-profit, charitable organization operating under a Board of Directors elected by provincial/territorial members.
This East Hub therapist will join the team of therapists responsible for therapy support at the East Hub, York University. This will include remote support and may involved travel to training camps and both of which are a key components of the AC High Performance Plan (HPP).
General Objective
This position falls under one of Athletics Canada's High Performance Training Hub's and the primary objective will be to provide sport science, para-medical or medical services as pertains to your job/expertise in the daily training environment (DTE), as well as working with other Sport Science and Sports Medicine (SSSM, aka Integrated Support Team IST) members with the monitoring of athlete health, including injury prevention strategies for all CAPP and other identified athletes accessing services at the Hub. When required, these services may also be extended to training camps and competitions outside of the DTE.
General Responsibilities / Nature of Services to be provided:
- Provide discipline specific IST services to CAPP and identified athletes.
- Participate in regular meetings with Hub IST and coaching staff (as requested;
- When requested, advise AC's HP Senior Management Team1 on relevant SSSM topics associated with your discipline (e.g. performance interventions, injuries, classification, TUE applications, supplementation standards etc. etc.);
The HP Senior Management Team consists of AC's High Performance Operations Director, Olympic Head Coach, Paralympic Head Coach, SSSMI Lead, Hub Lead East), Hub Lead (West) and Senior Manager, National Teams.
- Engage in regular proactive communication with AC's HP Senior Management Team and other staff such as the Hub Leads/Coordinators Coaches, and Sport Science/Sport Medicine Leads;
- Remain current on anti-doping rules and regulations (CCES / WADA);
- Utilize AC's database for charting notes/record keeping;
- It is expected that practitioner/contractor will track their own total time as allocated within the contract and to report total days/weeks on a quarterly basis (when requested). However, at any point if a contractor is predicting to be way over, or way under, service it is strongly recommended they proactively contact the SSSMI Lead;
- If required, attend annual the Canadian Senior Track and Field Championships and AC camps (as required according to budget and need) and to participate in meetings/seminars and for athlete follow-up.
Specific Responsibilities / Nature of Services to be provided:
- Provide musculoskeletal assessment and treatments to identified AC athletes.
- If required, observe track and weightlifting sessions to integrate treatment with coaches and S&C.
- Communicate to Medical Lead weekly any injury issues for weekly medical meeting.
- Lead or support in return to train protocol of injured athletes with the integrated IST team.
- Provide Hub musculoskeletal intake screen for athletes to access therapy and strength and conditioning
- Attend Hub and National IST meetings as requested and pre camps/Games to ensure adequate communication and planning
Athletics Canada (AC) Standard Sport Science (SS) & Sports Medicine (SM) Minimum Practitioner Guidelines
Athletics Canada requires the following minimum sports medicine practitioner standards/guidelines (outlined below) to provide any services to an athlete. Furthermore, they are required for a Service Provider partnership both at the Hubs, on National teams and when individual athletes seek out Integrated Support Team Services.
Athletic Therapist
- If Canadian, must be a certified member in good standing of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) (or the equivalent from the representative Country/Province/State
- It is strongly preferred that the practitioner has completed a continuing education course in orthopedics manual therapy.
- Must have Sports First Responder First Aid (or equivalent from local province/country) It is strongly preferred that the practitioner has national/international team experience.
- Must have valid liability insurance personally or through their institute to treat Canadian athletes (or the equivalent from the representative Country/Province/State)
Chiropractor
- Must be a registered and a member in good standing of the College of the representative Country/Province/State and be actively practicing.
- Must be a member in good standing of a representative Country/Province/State College or Association (e.g. Ontario or British Columbia Chiropractic Association)
- If Canadian, it is strongly preferred that the practitioner must have obtained a Fellowship with the College of Chiropractic in Sport Sciences Canada (FCCSS)
- It is strongly preferred that the practitioner should have experience working with high performance athletes.
- Must have Sports First Responder First Aid (or equivalent from local province/country)
- Must have valid liability coverage by Canadian Chiropractor Protective Association (CCPA) or equivalency personally or through their institute to cover work with Canadian athletes (or the equivalent from the representative Country/Province/State).
Physiotherapist
- If Canadian, must be a member in good standing of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) (or the equivalent from the representative Country/Province/State)
- If Canadian it is strongly preferred to have obtained a minimum Certificate in Sport Physiotherapy from the Sport Physiotherapy Council (SPC) (or the equivalent from the representative Country/Province/State)
- It is strongly preferred that the practitioner has completed a continuing education course in orthopedics manual therapy.
- Must have Sports First Responder First Aid (or equivalent from local province/country) It is strongly preferred that the practitioner has national/international team experience.
- Must have valid liability insurance personally or through their institute to treat Canadian athletes (or the equivalent from the representative Country/Province/State)
