The Government Affairs team is charged with understanding the global and local policy landscape in relation to Spotify's business objectives. The team, on behalf of the company, advocates for critical public policy issues. We represent the company before legislators and regulators, anticipate future events, and mitigate potential risks.

We are seeking an exceptional candidate to join our Government Affairs team as Manager of Canada Government Affairs. In this role, you will work as part of the global government affairs team, coordinating closely with subject matter experts on the team, as well as other groups throughout Spotify in order to develop thoughtful, effective, consistent positions on the issues of greatest importance to our company.

You will report to the Director of Government Affairs for the US & Canada and you may be based in Toronto, Ottawa, or Montreal.

What You'll Do

  • Engage regularly with policymakers (with a focus on Canada), including relevant federal departments such as Canadian Heritage and ISED.
  • Assist with representation before the CRTC as well as provincial governments and legislatures (e.g. in Quebec).
  • Develop expertise on the public policy issues of greatest commercial and reputational importance to Spotify, including music and culture-related policies, competition, online safety, copyright protection and licensing, and more.
  • Identify and evaluate the top-priority public policy issues affecting Spotify in Canada and develop and execute effective advocacy strategies around them.
    Work closely with other groups and departments inside Spotify - including legal, communications, social impact, product teams, compliance, and trust and safety- - to understand the priorities of internal partners and create approaches to key policy issues that advance company interests.
  • Direct the work of consultants to advance our advocacy goals.
  • Drive engagement, partnerships, and thought leadership on key public policy issues. with external organizations such as trade associations and civil society organizations.

Who You Are

  • Fluency in French and English.
  • Strong grasp of the political and cultural dynamics that drive Canadian policymaking.
  • 5+ years of experience developing and implementing public policy strategies and interacting professionally in a public policy environment.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Experience working in government, for a company, and/or a trade association.
  • Experience developing and implementing public policy strategies in the technology or cultural industries sector.
  • Experience working with senior government officials, private sector leaders, and other public policy professionals.
  • Outstanding existing relationships and the ability to build new ones with Parliament, relevant government departments, peers at Spotify and in other companies, and more.
  • A track record of effective advocacy before government officials.
  • A readiness to dive in to solve problems and think strategically
  • Able to travel throughout Canada, and elsewhere as needed.
  • Ability to work across time zones and cultures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an absolute commitment to professionalism and collegiality, and a high degree of integrity.
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills.
  • The successful applicant must be able to register as a lobbyist in all jurisdictions in Canada.

Where You'll Be

  • This role may be based in Toronto, Ottawa, or Montreal.
  • We offer you the flexibility to work where you work best There will be some in-person meetings, but it still allows for flexibility to work from home. We ask that you come to the office 2 to 3 times per week.
