Your Role

In this role you will support local governments, provincial and federal agencies including Municipal Districts, Municipalities, and Indigenous Governing Bodies in assessing and mitigating risks and recovering from disasters related to extreme weather and the effect on critical infrastructure, people, culture, and the economy.

You will be part of a dedicated, high performing team and collaborate with other professionals from across multiple sectors regionally and nationally. You will work closely with community leaders, elected officials, provincial and federal representatives, public safety professionals, case managers, engineers, planners, and project managers to support communities before, during and after extreme weather events.

Responsibilities

Develop

  • Work closely with our teams to further establish Climate Readiness and Community Recovery services to new and existing clients in Alberta and across Canada.
  • Collaborate with other professionals within Colliers to understand and communicate our successes.
  • Further develop your understanding of the various Emergency Management Legislation and Regulations across Canada, the Sendai Framework, community recovery processes, funding programs, Insurers, NGO partners and Government resources, to better serve clients' needs.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to improving the communities you work in by respecting local knowledge, customs, and the culture of the people, particularly Indigenous communities.
  • Continuously develop delegation skills and take on increasing responsibility for leading project deliverables.

 Support

  • Support emergency management preparedness, mitigation and recovery planning with communities, including development of plans, activities and training exercises.
  • Support the development of reports and information memorandums, research, and industry papers.
  • Support the preparation of business cases, proposals, presentations, and contributing to business development.
  • Travel to disaster affected communities in support of community recovery and community resiliency efforts.
  • Support the development of Hazard Identification & Risk Assessments (HIRA) that could impact communities and critical infrastructure and recommend adaptations to support resiliency.
Qualifications
  • A university degree, diploma or certificates in emergency management, climate adaptation, business continuity, project management or other related discipline would be an asset.
  • 3+ years of experience working in a response or recovery organization, dealing with climate related risks and disasters, supporting affected communities.
  • Strong understanding of the Emergency Management Act in Alberta and familiar with other emergency legislation across Canada.
  • Strong understanding of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency and the key programs areas within the agency.
  • Strong understanding of the Emergency Management Assistance Program.
  • A strong understanding of local governments, how they operate, organizational structures, legislated responsibilities, and the ability to communicate this understanding to Senior Leadership and elected officials.
  • Experience developing and leading municipal programs and services.
  • Experience working in and/or with Indigenous communities.
  • Experience working with trauma informed practices or principles while providing culturally appropriate support.
  • A broad skill set including strong presentation and stakeholder facilitation, business case and report writing, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • A positive outlook and demonstrate an energetic disposition with clients, along with the ability to effectively influence positive client decisions.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills enabling effective collaboration and interaction with clients, colleagues, and external industry subject matter experts.
  • Strong computer skills, including a working knowledge of scheduling (MS Project), Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Willing and able to travel to impact areas on short notice to provide timely support..
