Job Description

What is the opportunity?

In the Incubation team we are passionate about bringing the future of technology to RBC today. We explore, evaluate, and safely integrate the newest leading-edge tools and technologies that can transform how RBC develops software and delivers business value. We're at the forefront of innovation, identifying emerging technologies and turning them into secure, production-ready solutions that delight developers while maintaining the highest standards of security and reliability.

As a Staff Engineer you will be part of our small autonomous team using your experience and knowledge of a wide array of languages, technologies and best practices to evaluate and implement cutting-edge tools before they become mainstream. We are looking for top notch software engineers who are curious experimenters, great team players, and obsessive about making emerging technologies safe and accessible for enterprise use. You'll have the opportunity to work with the latest innovations in the software development landscape while ensuring they meet RBC's security, compliance, and operational standards—making an impact both by enabling exciting new capabilities and protecting the organization.

What will you do?
  • Evaluate and prototype emerging technologies, frameworks, and tools to assess their potential value and fit for RBC's technology landscape
  • Lead proof-of-concept projects that demonstrate the safe and effective use of cutting-edge technologies in an enterprise environment
  • Develop security frameworks, guardrails, and best practices that enable developers to use new tools safely while maintaining compliance with RBC's security and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with security, architecture, and platform teams to create pathways for rapid but safe adoption of innovative technologies
  • Build reference implementations and starter kits that make it easy for development teams across RBC to adopt vetted emerging tools
  • Use your communication and presentation skills to evangelize promising technologies and educate senior leaders and development teams on emerging trends and opportunities
  • Monitor the technology landscape continuously, staying ahead of industry trends in AI/ML, developer tools, cloud-native technologies, and software engineering practices
  • Participate in or lead architecture reviews to ensure new tools integrate seamlessly with existing systems and support long-term strategic goals
What do you need to succeed?

Must have:

  • Minimum 5-7 years experience working with large enterprise application development
  • Knowledge and experience in a variety of programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Java, TypeScript, Python, Angular, Spring Boot, Flask, etc.)
  • Experience working within professional software engineering practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source code management, build processes and testing
  • Ability to quickly learn and evaluate new technologies, separating hype from genuine value
  • Ability to simplify complex problems and communicate them in plain language to stakeholders and executives
  • Strong organizational, project management and time management capabilities to work as part of a team or autonomously
  • Experience balancing innovation with security, compliance, and operational concerns

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience in cloud platforms and technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Azure, AWS, GCP, etc.
  • Experience with DevOps and SRE and related technologies, e.g. Jenkins, Ansible, Blue/Green deployments, Service Level Objects, etc.
  • Experience with emerging technologies such as GenAI/LLMs, WebAssembly, edge computing, or other cutting-edge areas
  • Active participation in tech communities, early adopter programs, or beta testing of new tools and platforms
  • Experience in a matrix environment, such as a large, publicly traded corporation
  • Understanding of security frameworks, vulnerability management, and secure software supply chain practices

What's in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses and flexible benefits, competitive compensation, commissions, and stock where applicable
  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities
  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team
  • Flexible work/life balance options
  • Opportunities to do challenging work
  • Opportunities to take on progressively greater accountabilities
