The company

IFD Technologies is a growing tech company located in the heart of Mount Pleasant in Vancouver. We are a tight-knit team focused on developing innovative products designed to help electric utilities manage and troubleshoot distribution networks. For the past 25 years the company has grown by continuing to develop our flagship product, the IFD sensor. Recently we have expanded our product suite by developing a series of new and exciting digital products.

Your role

As a Product Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing intelligent sensor hardware that provides electric utilities with visibility into their distribution networks. You will focus on robust, embedded designs utilizing RF technology that must perform reliably for years in harsh field environments.

A note on pace and expectations: we are entering a critical growth phase with a major product launch on the horizon. This is an exciting time to join, but it also means the next 12 months will be demanding. We are looking for someone who thrives on the challenge of shipping complex products and is willing to dig deep to meet our launch targets. You will have a massive impact on the product's direction and success.

How you might spend your days

  • Designing hardware for harsh outdoor environments, ensuring reliability over a 15-year lifespan
  • Developing embedded designs and integrating RF communication technologies
  • Taking full ownership of your design modules and driving them to completion against strict project schedules
  • Prototyping and iterating concepts with a focus on proof-of-concept and feasibility
  • Performing hands-on bench testing and circuit bring-up using lab equipment
  • Designing and reviewing circuit schematics and layouts (PCBs)
  • Working closely with firmware and mechanical teams to ensure the physical and digital constraints align

The Must-Haves

  • You have a degree in Electrical, Mechatronics or a closely related engineering field
  • You are eligible for registration with EGBC
  • You have 5-10 years of engineering experience, preferably in industrial or outdoor electronics
  • You are strongly dedicated to your work and take personal accountability for meeting project deadlines
  • You are proficient in circuit design (analog and digital) and possess strong independent debugging and analysis skills to identify issues and implement fixes
  • You possess strong English communication skills (verbal and written)

Nice to Haves

You have experience in RF design

You have experience navigating regulatory and carrier certifications (ISED, FCC, PTCRB, etc.)

You understand the challenges of designing for longevity years) in varied environmental conditions

You have experience with embedded design

You have experience working with power utilities
