This Opportunity

The Toronto office of Smith + Andersen is seeking an
Electrical Designer
for our Transit Group. Reporting to a Project Manager, the Electrical Designer prepares the necessary drawings, specifications and reports in order to deliver a project. The designer is responsible for developing layouts and the design of electrical building and/or station systems including lighting, security, fire protection and electrical/switch/transformer rooms while following relevant standards and adhering to requirements of relevant building codes.

What You'll Do

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary Transit/Transportation projects team, with other Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and Low Voltage Specialists.
  • Work on large, complex projects utilizing various project delivery methods including: Design-Bid-Build (DBB); Design-Build (DB); and Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP)/Public-Private Partnership (P3) methods such as Design-Build-Finance (DBF) and Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintain (DBFOM).
  • Work on both sides of AFP/P3 projects, including proponent side and technical advisor/compliance side, depending on project in question. · Helps shape the future of Transit/Transportation infrastructure across the Province of Ontario.
  • Work with large Transit/Transportation clients including regional authorities, municipalities, and government agencies (e.g. Metrolinx, TTC, YRT, GTAA, regions, parking authorities, etc.).
  • Prepare, or assist Principal/Associate-in-charge with, the development of all system engineering concepts (e.g. design brief) and concept report. Reviews and manages the design in terms of construction budgets.
  • Prepare all calculations and selects all equipment. May assign tasks to designer and CAD Technician where appropriate and is capable of designing within AutoCAD, Revit, and Microstation when needed.
  • Fully understand Codes and Standards relevant for the project and is able to communicate all requirements to the internal project team, external project team, owner, and Authorities having Jurisdiction.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, and reports necessary to deliver a project.
  • Design building systems in accordance with relevant standards, the requirements of municipal or provincial building codes, and other applicable transit standards.
  • Review layouts and services for continuity; developing various electrical systems layouts in co-ordination with the structural, architectural, and mechanical components of a building and/or station.
  • Develop lighting layouts and coordinate with other disciplines.
  • Develop power distribution layouts and sizing, as well as layouts of electrical/switch/transformer rooms.
  • Perform electrical load calculations.
  • Respond to both internal and external communication regarding project or design status; report to the principal and/or project manager regarding the design status.
  • Liaise with all project consultants; coordinate design requirements with all disciplines and supervise drawings between other disciplines; check layouts of electrical services for interferences with other components of the building such as structure, ceilings, millwork, etc.
  • Familiar with structural, architectural, and mechanical models to appreciate space limitations and interferences.
  • Design electrical building and/or station systems directly in Revit/CAD, and/or Microstation; adhering to company BIM/CAD/MS standards.
  • Work with clash/coordination reports, assisting with model audits and overall health of the model.
  • Liaise with suppliers and/or manufacturers for design support, equipment and component selection.
  • Assist with the distribution of work between the internal design team and attend project/technical meetings; where required.
  • Assist in construction administration by reviewing equipment shop drawings and conducting site visits, site reviews and preparing change notices, site instructions, etc.
  • Any other tasks assigned by Principals, Associates or Project Managers required to assist in the completion of projects.

Who You Are

  • Four or more years of direct industry experience in the field of electrical building and/or station services.
  • Experience working on large Transit/Transportation projects is desired.
  • Experience with Infrastructure Ontario (IO) AFP process is an asset.
  • Experience with Transit/Transportation client standards (e.g. Metrolinx, TTC, etc.) is an asset.
  • Experience developing Reference Concept Designs (RCDs) and Project Specific Output Specifications (PSOS) is an asset.
  • Diploma/Degree from an electrical building services/engineering program.
  • Demonstrate a strong desire for advancement and professional development.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in complex environment often driven by project deadlines.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Autodesk Revit 2017 or newer is required, with exposure to electrical layouts and systems.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk AutoCAD, AutoCAD MEP, Navisworks Manage, and Dynamo software.
  • Working knowledge of Microstation software would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office suites, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with systems such as electrical distribution, fire alarm, lighting, security, communication and/or audio-visual systems are preferred assets.
  • Familiarity with lighting calculations and able to perform such calculations.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Highly innovative and motivated with an attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate effectively with both internal and external clients.
  • Ability to accept direction.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and have a positive attitude.
  • Able to work independently, as well as contribute to the team.
