Health Promotion Specialist, Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression (Black Health) (1 full-time position)
The Middlesex-London Health Unit has an exciting vacancy for a full-time Health Promotion Specialist, Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression (Black Health) to work on the Comprehensive Health Promotion Team (A) in the Family and Community Health division at our Citi Plaza location, London, Ontario.
Under the direction of the Manager, Comprehensive Health Promotion, the incumbent will:
- Coordinate and actively engage in refining and implementing all recommendations in MLHU's Anti-Black Racism Plan;
- Contribute to a positive work environment, work collaboratively with others and establish positive and constructive internal and external working relationships, with a focus on engagement of local African, Black and Caribbean (ABC) populations and Black-led organizations;
- Provide consultative support to employees at all levels across the organization regarding Anti-Black Racism and act as liaison where needed;
- Develop and produce written materials and knowledge mobilization tools including but not limited to: reports, technical documents, scoping reviews, health communications, presentations, educational resources and literature reviews and analysis, etc.;
- Implement project management tools and processes to organize and support project completion;
- Develop and provide knowledge translation for health promotion theories, strategies, and policies in key public health areas, including providing advice and recommendations to leadership as it relates to policy recommendations, legislation and initiatives at various levels of government;
- Assess and critically appraise evidence for health promotion action, healthy public policy options and health equity implications;
- Conduct environmental scans, needs assessments, and situational assessments to identify community perspectives, assets, resources, challenges, and gaps;
- Able to engage in culturally humble ways with partners and other relevant parties with the aim of enhancing collective capacity to support Black health;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Behavioural Sciences, Education or related field; However, candidates who have an equivalent level of expertise acquired through related employment experience and on-the-job training or alternative education will be considered in order to support Employment Equity.
- Minimum of 5 years of applied health promotion experience with demonstrated advanced skills in community development and mobilization, diversity and inclusion, community needs assessment, health communication, educational and skill capacity building, and/or healthy public policy development and implementation; Lived experience of being marginalized and a member of a racialized community is a requirement for this position;
- In accordance with MLHU's Anti-Black Racism Plan and the special program provisions of the Ontario Human Rights Code (section 24), qualified applicants who identify as a member of the African, Black and Caribbean (ABC) community are preferred. Candidates from this designated group are invited to voluntarily self-identify in their cover letter, in a transparent manner, as part of the application process.
- Extensive experience in community engagement and relationship-building focused on African, Black and Caribbean (ABC) communities is preferred.
- Experience in some or all of the following skills of public health practice: applied health promotion, policy development, community needs assessment, situational assessments, health communication, educational and skill building at individual, group and community levels, continuous quality improvement, planning and evaluation, and healthy public policy development and implementation;
- Knowledge and ability to apply existing frameworks and strategies that support Black wellness;
- Ability to work independently;
- Understanding of and experience working with anti-racism, anti-oppression, de-colonization and culturally safe approaches, and in helping to create safe and inclusive environments for diverse populations;
- Understanding of Indigenous history, colonization, racism, and Calls to Action;
- Significant experience working with racialized people; established relationships with local and/or regional African, Black and Caribbean (ABC) communities/organizations preferred;
- Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written and oral communication skills with demonstrated experience creating project proposals, and evidence briefs.
- Demonstrated experience mobilizing committees and working groups to achieve measurable outcomes; and
- Demonstrated application of health equity principles and theory, and experience in taking action to reduce health inequities.
- Possession of a valid Class "G" Ontario Driver's License and use of a vehicle for work-related purposes OR the ability to arrange for transportation to multiple locations in London and Middlesex County.
- The ability to communicate (oral and written) in French and/or any other language(s) is highly desirable.
The annual salary for this position ranges from $74,885.17 to $93,606.60 based on qualifications and experience.
