Company Description

ACOTO is the founding branch of the Architectural Conservancy Ontario (ACO), connected to a network of branches and members across Ontario. Established in 1933, this volunteer-led charity focuses on preserving Toronto's built heritage and cultural landscapes. ACOTO assists communities and owners in preserving significant stories, buildings, and structures, such as the successful effort to save Union Station from demolition. Through education, advocacy, and resources like the annual Symposium and TO Built database, ACOTO promotes the conservation and re-use of culturally, architecturally, and historically important structures and landscapes to benefit all Torontonians.

ACOTO Treasurer's Role

The Treasurer acts as a financial advisor to ACOTO's Board. As ACOTO contracts a book keeper and annual financial statements are prepared by ACO Inc.'s external auditor, the ACOTO Treasurer is the communicator and interpreter of financial information for the branch board. Duties include:

  • · preparation and monitoring of the branch annual budget,
  • · quarterly reporting of branch financial status and investment returns;
  • · surveying ACOTO board investment risk appetite;
  • implementation of investment strategy;
  • · compilation of support documents external auditor's annual audit;
  • · liaison with the bookkeeper and external investment advisor;
  • · advising on the financial implications of strategic issues for the board;
  • · monitoring branch controls and compliance with governing legislation and ACO Inc. financial policies (notably, Charities Section of the Canada Tax Act, Ontario Labour Code, and the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act).

These duties, as well as participating in ten ACO Board meetings a year, require approximately 7-12 hours per month. There is no remuneration for ACO Toronto Board roles.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications:

· CPA, CMA, CGA, CFA or equivalent financial credential;

· years' experience working in a financial management role;

· Experience with NFP accounting and Quick Books desirable;

· Familiarity with CRA regulations regarding charitable organizations;

· NFP Board governance experience desirable, but not essential; and

· Interest or involvement with heritage, architecture, or culture.
