About Us

The department is responsible for the construction and
maintenance of the provincial highways
; the provision of the provincial ferry services;
management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment
; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers and construction and management of provincial government buildings.

This includes
Overnight Highway Maintenance Equipment Operators
who are responsible for snow clearing operations on a number of routes in regions across the province and will be assigned to Depots in the following locations:

Avalon Region:
Donovans, Foxtrap, Whitbourne, Avondale, Bay Roberts

Eastern Region:
Goobies, Bellevue.

Central Region:
Bishop's Falls, Lewisporte

Western Region:
Corner Brook, Deer Lake, Wild Cove, Cold Brook-Stephenville

About the Opportunities

The
Overnight Highway Maintenance Equipment Operator
is responsible for skilled work in safe operation of a variety of heavy equipment used in highway maintenance work. This includes:

  • operating heavy equipment such as a tandem truck, front-end-loader, backhoe, etc.;
  • performing pre and post trip inspections of equipment;
  • preparing and maintaining work records on the operation of assigned equipment;
  • plowing, sanding and salting roads during the winter season;
  • performing preventative maintenance functions and non-complex servicing;
  • participating in required on-going training;
  • interacting with the general public and perform other related duties as required.

Screening Criteria

About You

As an Overnight Highway Maintenance Equipment Operator, you have
experience with maintenance and practices utilized in the operation of heavy equipment
, and
experience with winter maintenance and operation of heavy equipment
, would be considered an asset for this position. Your education includes the completion of a
High School diploma—or an equivalent combination of education and experience
. You currently possess the
appropriate operator's licenses as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (Class 03 license with 08 and 09 endorsements)
. Along with this experience and licenses, you can clearly demonstrate the
ability to report to the assigned Depot within one half hour of receiving notification for an after-duty call.

Assessment Criteria

To be successful in this position, you'll bring a solid
understanding of maintenance and practices utilized in the operation of heavy equipment
, and you may also have knowledge of the
maintenance and operation of heavy winter equipment.
You're well-informed of the
safety regulations utilized in the operation of heavy equipment
, keeping this front of mind when providing important maintenance and equipment inspections.

Your
time management
and
heavy equipment operating skills
support the effective delivery of highway maintenance work in Depot locations across the province. You apply sound
decision making
and perform your duties in a
professional
manner in this front-line service position.

  1. Proof of valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 03 license with 08 and 09 endorsements
  2. Drivers Abstract clear of any demerit point infractions and no evidence of suspension

Conditions of Acceptance

  1. Willing to accept overtime as required, which may be on short notice

Information for Applicants

Practical heavy equipment testing will be administered prior to interview. Driver's abstract will need to be supplied at that time.

Successful applicants will primarily be assigned to the overnight shift and will participate in a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays. The Department reserves the right to adjust schedules, as needed, based on operational requirements and staff availability.
