Oak and Orca School is looking for BC Certified Teachers and Experienced Educators, living in BC, who wish to provide flexible, inquiry-driven education to students and families who are learning at home around BC and to students who attend our in-person school in Victoria (lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ territory). We have remote, in-person, and hybrid options and seek to find a mutually beneficial fit.

General Home Learning Responsibilities (Certified Teachers Only)
- Teach all learning areas for K-9 students and/or specific learning areas for students in grades 10-12
- Guide student learning through the co-creation of an evolving learning plan
- Provide individualized suggestions for student learning based on emergent needs
- Communicate with students and families through a variety of mediums (e-mail, video-conference, phone, and other online platforms used by the school)
- Support students to become active participants in their learning (planning, reflecting, etc.)
- Present online workshops and groups
- Manage student interactions in accordance with school culture/ethics/policies
- Report non-judgmentally and anecdotally, including tracking the BC learning standards
- Attend consensus-rich decision-making meetings in teams
- Support the growth of our programs (e.g. developing learning activities and resources, supporting new coworkers and co-op students, facilitating meetings and minute-taking, assisting with community events, etc.)
Most of our teaching staff work in a blended environment in Victoria, spending some time with students in person and some time teaching home learning students.
General In-Person Learning Responsibilities (Certified Teachers And Other Educators)
- Teach or co-teach open classroom, workshops, reading siesta, active play, and/or math groups
- Supervise and engage with students during breaks and before and after school
- Support students to become active participants in their learning (planning, reflecting, etc.)
- Learn about NVC and other tools for compassionate engagement with students
- Use compassionate and non-judgemental practices to support emergent student needs
- Manage student interactions in accordance with school culture/ethics/policies
- Report non-judgmentally and anecdotally, including tracking the BC learning standards
- Attend consensus decision making meetings in teams
- Contribute to general cleaning and maintenance of indoor and outdoor spaces
- Support the growth of our programs (e.g. developing curriculum for home-learning programs,
marketing, responding to new inquiries, supporting new coworkers, community events, etc.)
- (small team) Plan and run weekly field trips (often by bicycle)
We would be especially interested to hear from teachers/educators with any of the following:
- Experience with supporting students who are learning at home.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal), and experience with co-operative teamwork
- Strong computer skills (typing, general comfort with computer software and the Internet, ability to support others with troubleshooting computer issues, etc)
- Experience with supporting students with diverse abilities and/or knowledge of Special Education funding categories
- Excellence in organization, tracking/follow-through skills, accuracy, memory, and developing/following procedures
- Experience with alternative teaching practices that focus on child-centred learning
- Understanding of bioregionalism and respect for the importance of both ecological literacy and critical thinking
- Willingness to be mentored in the philosophy of the school
- Initiative and enthusiasm
- Understanding of sciences and ecology
- Firm mathematical understanding
- Experience with Compassionate Communication and Consensus Decision-Making
- Interest in being part of different teams and having a multi-faceted role
- Interest in working for a values-based non-profit organization
