Work environmentThe Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is part of the core public service administration named in Schedule IV of the Financial Administration Act (FAA) and is also subject to the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA). This being said, the TSB is an independent arm's length agency that reports to Parliament through the President of the King's Privy Council for Canada. The organization aspires to be a modern world-class organization that evolves and adapts as it strives to influence changes that advance transportation safety. The TSB has a strong reputation in Canada and around the world.
The TSB is a small organization with approximately 240 employees and 5 Board Members, including the Chair. The organization operates in a decentralized manner through 10 locations across Canada. Employees work in a collegial and collaborative environment.
Intent of the processThe intent of this process is to fill one indeterminate position with an English essential language profile. A pool of partially qualified candidates may be created and used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various tenures, language profiles and/or requirements, and security requirements.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)Graduation with a degree from a recognized university in materials, metallurgical, mechanical or aeronautical engineering or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.
Degree equivalency
Eligible for certification as a professional engineer in Canada.
Significant* and recent** experience conducting detailed engineering examinations and analysis, interpretation of findings and providing professional engineering expertise in the field of failure analysis of materials and metallurgical engineering.
Significant* practical experience in preparing samples, performing laboratory tests and documenting findings for the analysis of materials, failures and metallurgy of mechanical systems.
Significant* practical experience using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to analyse fracture features on a variety of failed components and material systems.
Experience writing authoritative professional engineering reports with respect to findings, analysis and technical issues.
- Significant is understood to mean the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of complex activities for at least five (5) years.
**Recent is understood to mean in the last ten (10) years.

Knowledge of national and international material standards selection and properties for various types of components found in machinery.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment such as tensile tester, hardness testers, Charpy impact tester, FTIR spectroscopies and fumehoods.
Ability to manage multiple projects to meet objectives and tight deadlines.
Ability to work in a team environment
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
