About SPG

Sustainable Projects Group (SPG) is transforming how existing buildings are managed and upgraded. We combine consulting, software, engineering design and construction to decarbonize the built environment and create lasting value for our clients. We're building a national engineering and construction team that is retrofit-specific, tech-enabled, and volume-focused (to meet our shared Climate targets). Our services are useful, scalable, and actionable — aligned with capital planning needs and powered by integration with SPG's consulting and software services. This role is essential to realizing that vision.

Position Summary

Join SPG as our Senior Estimator and strengthen our ability to deliver accurate, reliable, and scalable costing across all retrofit and construction projects. As a key technical leader, you will drive the full estimating function from early audit through design and into construction. You will build cost control systems, support project teams with real-time pricing, and ensure every scope is aligned with budget, funding, and delivery strategy. This role blends deep technical knowledge with strong communication and analytical skills. You thrive in fast-moving environments, understand how design decisions influence cost, and believe in building pricing systems that support clarity and performance for project managers, engineers, and construction teams.

We are a high-impact sustainability company with a client-focused, entrepreneurial mindset. Your ability to interpret data, develop systems, and guide teams with confidence will be critical to your success and impact in this role.

Responsibilities:

  1. Estimating Leadership and Cost Management

  2. Lead the development of accurate cost estimates from early audit through final construction pricing.

  3. Build and maintain cost control systems that track budgets, forecasts, and capital planning.
  4. Support schedule integration by aligning cost and timeline assumptions across all phases.
  5. Provide clear cost guidance during the design phase to ensure scope remains aligned with budget and funding requirements.
  6. Produce complete capital costing packages that support energy audits, engineering packages, and construction proposals.

  7. Cross Functional Collaboration

  8. Work closely with project managers, engineers, and auditors to translate technical information into clear, practical pricing.

  9. Support design teams with cost reviews, value engineering options, and budget validation.
  10. Help the construction team finalize full construction costs with reliable, defensible pricing.
  11. Guide internal teams in understanding cost drivers, assumptions, and risks.

  12. Systems and Process Development

  13. Create and maintain estimating tools, templates, trackers, and workflows to standardize delivery.

  14. Develop live cost tracking systems that support preconstruction and construction teams.
  15. Improve clarity and consistency in all estimating processes to support scalability and growth.
  16. Align estimating practices with project management, engineering, and construction workflows.

  17. Procurement, RFPs, and Tendering

  18. Lead the preparation and coordination of RFPs and tenders for both engineering and construction.

  19. Review subcontractor and supplier pricing to ensure completeness, competitiveness, and accuracy.
  20. Support contract development by providing clear scopes, pricing notes, and cost breakdowns.
  21. Build strong relationships with subcontractors and vendors to support reliable and competitive pricing.

  22. Quality, Accuracy, and Client Support

  23. Ensure all estimates meet SPG's standards for accuracy, risk assessment, and documentation.

  24. Support client conversations by explaining cost assumptions and helping prioritize scope based on budget.
  25. Provide high quality, transparent cost information that supports trust and decision making.
  26. Contribute to growth by supporting strong proposals and clear, credible costing.

What We're Looking For:

  • 7 to 10+ years of direct estimating experience in general contracting, engineering design, or both, with a proven track record of leading complex projects.
  • Strong technical background with an engineering mindset and deep understanding of costing.
  • Experience with retrofits, building systems, and how design decisions influence cost.
  • Ability to build full cost control systems, capital budgets, and trackers.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to explain numbers clearly to project teams and clients.
  • Experience preparing RFPs, tenders, and detailed cost breakdowns for engineering and construction.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Strategic thinker who builds scalable systems and supports operational growth.
  • Experience with construction accounting systems and estimating software is an asset.
  • Engineering degree or relevant technical certification preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

SPG's Core Values in Action:

  • Hustle with Heart - We get sh** done, because we care. You'll optimize our estimating capacity and effectiveness in ways that create lasting impact.
  • Innovate and Adapt, Constantly - Technology does not stop improving and neither does our team – You'll develop construction systems that evolve with our scale and technologies.
  • Own It, Together - Do what you say. Attack problems, not people. You'll take ownership and hold yourself and others accountable, working as one integrated team.
  • Say It Straight. Clear. Fast. Actionable - Time is precious; we use it wisely. You value fast, clear communication with clients and teams.
  • Client Focused, Always - We show up, step up and deliver. We make every interaction count. You'll ensure every estimate, recommendation, and touchpoint help us to deliver exactly what our clients need.
