Summary:
The supervisor provides on-floor supervision in daily operations, functional direction and guidance to the clinic staff. This position provides supervisory support in optimizing service resources, staffing requirements, equipment, and supplies to support superior patient care. Functioning as a member of the technical team, the supervisor is responsible for arranging technical coverage. This role also assists with technical instruction and labs for undergraduate veterinary students and veterinary technology students.
This position works in a 24 hour/365 days per year animal facility with small animals such as canine, feline, avian, and some exotics and large animals such as bovine, equine, caprine, porcine, ovine and some exotics which exposes employees to the unpredictability of animals, dander, and waste. Animal handling and manipulation is a component of this role.
Duties and Responsibilities:- Oversees the daily operations of the clinic, in collaboration with management, including workflows, staffing, troubleshooting, and supporting efficient and effective service delivery.
- Addresses operational problems, escalating more complex issues to management.
- Provides guidance and mentorship to clinic team members, fostering a collaborative environment.
- Performs and monitors technical duties across service areas.
- Monitors each team's resources and facilitates access to sufficient and appropriate resources for patient care.
- Provides guidance on daily work schedules to accommodate fluctuations in workloads and collaborates with scheduling staff to maintain adequate technical coverage.
- Participates on interview panels, onboards and offboards staff, and provides coaching and feedback in support of staff development.
- Arranges preventative maintenance and repairs for equipment, keeping records, developing standard operating procedures, and promoting adherence to safe practices.
- Assists with technical instruction for undergraduate veterinary students and veterinary technology students.
- Complies with occupational health and safety requirements by maintaining current training, monitoring staff adherence to safety protocols, and providing ongoing supervision to support a safe and healthy workplace.
- Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
- Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion, and responds to different perspectives with curiosity and non-judgement.
- Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position.
- A diploma from a recognized two-year Veterinary Technology or Animal Health Technology program.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists (SAVT).
- Advanced training or certification in leadership training is preferred.
- Minimum of five years of recent experience as a registered veterinary technician, including substantial work in both large and small animal clinical practice.
- Minimum of three years of supervisory experience in a clinical setting.
- Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to take initiative and multi-task efficiently and effectively.
- Ability to build relationships and work effectively and collaboratively with a team.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to perform moderate physical tasks in the transfer, lifting, and positioning of patients and tolerate exposure to a wide variety of animals.
