Site Reliability / DevOps Engineer
- Location: Hybrid – In-office 3 days/week in Calgary, Canada
- Type: Full-time
- Reports to: Engineering Manager
- Company: PaintScout – Estimating Software for Painting Companies
About PaintScout
PaintScout is a fast-growing SaaS company that helps painting contractors streamline their estimating and sales process. We're trusted by companies across North America to help them grow with faster, smarter quotes. As we scale, we're investing in our engineering foundation to ensure our platform is reliable, secure, and easy to operate.
The Role
We're looking for a Site Reliability / DevOps Engineer to become the first dedicated reliability-focused engineer at PaintScout.
Your role is to ensure our production systems are reliable, observable, scalable, and secure, while keeping developer workflows fast and frictionless. You'll work closely with our Staff Engineer, Engineering Manager, and product engineers to improve system health without slowing delivery.
As part of this ownership, you'll help evaluate our existing vendors, technologies, and services. You'll partner with engineering leadership to recommend and lead pragmatic migrations or replacements where current tools no longer meet our reliability, security, scalability, or cost needs—balancing improvement with delivery velocity.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys owning reliability and security end-to-end, building simple and robust systems, and helping a growing SaaS company mature its operational practices.
What You'll Do
Reliability & Infrastructure
Build, maintain, and improve cloud infrastructure and deployment pipelines with a strong focus on simplicity, reliability, and clarity.
Improve observability across systems, including logging, metrics, and alerting, to ensure issues are detected and resolved quickly.
Partner with product engineers to make production systems easier to operate, debug, and support.
Strengthen backup, recovery, and incident response procedures, including runbooks and documentation.
Platform & Tooling Evolution
Evaluate existing infrastructure vendors, tooling, and managed services for reliability, security, scalability, cost, and operational fit.
Recommend and help lead incremental migrations away from tools or services that introduce unnecessary risk, complexity, or operational burden.
Design and implement replacement solutions with a focus on simplicity, stability, and developer experience.
Plan and execute migrations in a way that minimizes risk and avoids disrupting product delivery.
Security & Risk Reduction
Establish and maintain security best practices across infrastructure, deployments, and access controls.
Improve secrets management, least-privilege access, and auditability of critical systems.
Partner with engineering leadership to identify and reduce operational and security risks.
Help ensure security improvements integrate naturally into developer workflows rather than adding friction.
Compliance & Process
Support early-stage compliance readiness (e.g. SOC 2), including documentation, evidence collection, and control implementation.
Help formalize operational processes as the company scales while keeping them lightweight, practical, and developer-friendly.
Growth & Impact
Be the foundational owner of reliability, DevOps, and infrastructure practices at PaintScout.
Shape how security, operations, and platform tooling evolve as the product and team scale.
Work directly with senior engineering leadership on long-term technical strategy.
Opportunity to grow into a senior or staff-level reliability role as the company grows.
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or infrastructure-focused roles
- Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS
Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
- Solid understanding of security fundamentals, including access controls, secrets management, and least-privilege design
- Experience evaluating, migrating, or modernizing infrastructure, vendors, or platform tooling
- Familiarity with or exposure to compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, etc.) is a strong plus
- Strong problem-solving skills and a pragmatic, systems-oriented mindset
Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving
Nice to Have - familiarity with our stack:
- Backend: on AWS Lambda (serverless)
- Datastores: Cloudant / CouchDB, Elasticsearch
- Frontend: React
- Experience supporting SaaS or B2B platforms
- Previous experience as the first DevOps / SRE hire at a company
- Strong interest in developer experience and internal platform tooling
Why Join PaintScout?
- Be the first reliability-focused engineer, with real ownership and influence.
- Shape the infrastructure, security, and operational foundation of a growing SaaS platform.
- Collaborate closely with a small, product-focused engineering team.
- Make high-impact technical decisions while staying hands-on.
- Help build systems that are not just scalable—but calm, understandable, and reliable.
