Trades Success Coach

We're looking for a passionate Trades Success Coach to join our team This is a hands-on teaching and coaching role for someone with a background in construction who understands the trades as a pathway to meaningful, stable careers, and is committed to actively supporting people facing complex barriers to employment in building successful careers in this industry.

As a social enterprise, we train and employ people working to overcome complex barriers to employment, creating a direct pathway from the classroom to paid work in the trades. In this role, you'll work closely with the Trades Instructor and program team to deliver on-the-tools training while coaching and mentoring trainees - many of whom have faced systemic exclusion - to build technical skills, strong professional habits, and a clear understanding of job-site expectations. Through daily presence in the classroom, the Trades Success Coach reinforces safe work practices, supports a strong health and safety culture, and provides experience-based mentorship that helps trainees move confidently toward long-term careers in the trades.

Some evening and weekend work may be required

Salary Range

$50,000 - $70,000 depending on experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Classroom Instruction & Support

  • Support the safe and effective delivery of hands-on trades training in the workshop
  • Observe trainee skill development, work habits, engagement, and safety practices, providing tool demonstrations, guidance, and corrective feedback as needed
  • Assist with classroom flow, tool use, and trainee engagement during practical instruction
  • Deliver instruction on the construction industry, career and apprenticeship pathways, including career readiness topics such as work ethic, punctuality, resilience, motivation, and industry expectations

Coaching & Mentorship (Industry Readiness & Career Pathways)

  • Mentor trainees by balancing compassion with accountability to build professional skills such as communication, punctuality, and teamwork
  • Conduct direct, respectful coaching conversations related to performance, conduct, and readiness for work in the construction industry
  • Foster trust, community, and personal responsibility while reinforcing expectations
  • Support trainees in identifying suitable trade pathways based on observed skills, interests, and strengths

Health & Safety Leadership

  • Reinforce strong health and safety practices within the training centre and workshop environment
  • Participate in safety walkthroughs, inspections, and ongoing safety discussions as part of the program's safety culture
  • Model strong safety culture and accountability for trainees and staff

Administrative and Program Support

  • Record and maintain documentation related to trainee progress
  • Participate in the daily operation of the training centre, including opening and closing procedures
  • Support off-site activities, site visits, and general program delivery, and assist with other program initiatives as required
  • Contribute to program team meetings, planning discussions, and collaborative instructional improvement

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in the construction or carpentry trades
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or supporting workers in a construction setting
  • Familiarity with apprenticeship pathways, construction career options, and trade unions
  • Confident English speaker with strong communication skills and the ability to adapt messaging to diverse audiences
  • Comfortable delivering presentations to groups and facilitating discussions
  • Demonstrated ability to balance compassion with accountability when mentoring individuals facing complex personal and professional challenges
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations, have difficult conversations, and provide clear, constructive feedback
  • Valid G driver's license and access to a vehicle (asset)
  • Lived experience navigating systemic barriers to employment - or close, sustained experience working within communities impacted by racism, involvement with the criminal justice system, poverty, or historical exclusion from the construction industry - is considered a strong asset
  • Passionate about Building Up's mission and supporting trainee growth and success
