Position Overview

We are seeking a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) to join our growing Calgary team. The successful candidate will lead and oversee asbestos, lead, mold, and bacterial contamination assessments, ensuring compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulation, and Code, and related environmental health standards.

This position blends field investigation, analytical review, and client consultation, ideal for someone who enjoys technical problem-solving and meaningful work that directly impacts public health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct and oversee asbestos building materials surveys, lead-based paint assessments, and mold/bacteria investigations in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.
  • Collect bulk, air, surface, and water samples following recognized standards (NIOSH, AHERA, ASTM, etc.).
  • Interpret analytical results, identify exposure risks, and prepare clear, defensible technical reports.
  • Develop abatement recommendations, exposure control plans, and provide guidance on OHS Code compliance.
  • Support insurance and restoration clients with emergency response guidance for flood, fire, or microbial incidents.
  • Perform post-abatement air clearances and visual inspections for asbestos, lead, and mold remediation projects.
  • Maintain calibration and QA/QC documentation for sampling instruments and ensure field data integrity.
  • Train and mentor junior staff and technicians on safe work practices and inspection techniques.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance and clarity.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related discipline
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation (ABIH) or equivalent professional certification, ROH or ROHT designation
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in hazardous materials, industrial hygiene, or environmental consulting
  • Strong knowledge of asbestos regulations under Alberta OHS, including exposure limits, abatement procedures, and clearance criteria
  • Proficiency in technical writing and interpreting laboratory data
  • Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle (mileage reimbursed)
  • Excellent communication and client-service skills

Assets (Preferred)

  • Experience working directly with insurance adjusters, restoration contractors, and environmental consultants
  • Training in asbestos air monitoring, respirator fit testing, and exposure control program development
