We are recruiting a GIS (Geographic Information System) Techician on behalf of our client.

The GIS Technician supports geospatial data analysis, model development, and mapping for large-scale projects across various municipalities and provinces. The primary initial focus involves critical database cleanup, validation, and integration of network as-builts to ensure data integrity for reconciliation and decision-making. This role requires strong proficiency in GIS software, database management, spatial analysis, and scripting for workflow automation, particularly within a fibre optics/telecom network context.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: 2-3 years of experience in GIS analysis or a similar role.
  • Domain Familiarity: Familiarity with network planning (specifically fibre optics and telecom).

GIS Software **

  • Proficient in ArcGIS, QGIS, and similar software. Working knowledge of GIS platforms (Patchmanager and AutoCad etc).

Geospatial Analysis **

  • Strong background in spatial data analysis, geospatial database management, and cartographic principles.

Data Sources **

  • Working knowledge of open data sources, satellite imagery, and integrating various formats (shapefiles, GeoJSON, CSV, AutoCad, excel and visio). Additionally, proficient in reading and input Telecom Asbuilt information

Optional Qualifications:

Programming/DB

  • Proficiency in Python (including geospatial libraries like Geopandas, Shapely). Experience with SQL and large geospatial datasets.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

1. Geospatial Data Management & Quality Control

  • Database Maintenance: Create, maintain, and automate reliable, consistent geospatial databases for all network assets (cables, splice points, hubs, customer connections).
  • Data Integration: Organize, verify, and integrate diverse data sources: as-builts (PDF, CAD), survey data, open-source datasets, and municipal boundaries.
  • Quality Assurance: Perform topology checks (overlaps, gaps), run integrity reports, and clean/preprocess datasets to ensure data accuracy and resolve discrepancies.

2. Network Design & Analysis Support

  • Mapping: Create maps and layouts for fibre routes, connections, and network expansions for engineers and stakeholders.
  • Analysis: Assist in geospatial analysis for route optimization, considering constraints like terrain, land use, and cost.
  • Modeling: Use tools (e.g., QGIS, AutoCad, Patchmanager and excel) to model and validate routing scenarios, ensuring adherence to business rules and boundary constraints.

3. Automation & Visualization

  • Workflow Optimization: Utilize GIS software (Patchmanager, ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD) and develop Python scripts to automate geospatial processes and analyses.

4. Collaboration & Support

  • Liaison: Work closely with Engineering, Construction, and Operations teams to ensure seamless and accurate geospatial data integration.

5. Additional skillsets

  • Visualization: Design and produce high-quality, customized maps and interactive web-based visualizations for diverse project requirements
  • Ad-Hoc Requests: Respond promptly to ad-hoc mapping and data analysis requests to support business decisions and project planning

Salary will be based on experience and qualifications and will be competitive for the industry.

Pay: From $35.00 per hour
