The Opportunity:
We are looking for a Contracts Specialist to support our Canadian engineering and environmental consulting operations. This role focuses on reviewing, negotiating, and managing contracts, terms & conditions, and commercial risks for a wide range of public and private sector projects. The ideal candidate will bring a strong understanding of professional services agreements, Canadian procurement practices, and engineering consulting frameworks.
As a Contracts Specialist, you will review, interpret, and administer contracts across a range of consulting projects. You will liaise with project managers, clients, and external partners to ensure contractual obligations are met accurately and in a timely manner. Your legal background and attention to detail will support risk management, compliance, and alignment with company policies. This is a future position within the organization.
Job Responsibilities:
- Review and negotiate client agreements, subconsultant contracts, NDAs, and teaming agreements in compliance with Canadian laws and industry practices.
- Evaluate terms and conditions for risk exposure (e.g., indemnity, insurance, limitation of liability, warranties) and propose revisions or alternatives.
- Support the proposal and business development teams during RFP/RFQ reviews.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders including project managers, legal counsel, finance, and health & safety to ensure contract compliance and risk mitigation.
- Draft and manage contract modifications, scope changes, and client correspondence throughout the project lifecycle.
- Track contractual obligations, deliverables, and expiry/renewal dates using appropriate tools and systems.
- Support claims management and dispute resolution, working closely with legal and operations teams as needed.
- Assist with developing standard contract templates, clause libraries, and commercial policies tailored to the Canadian consulting environment.
- Provide training and support to project teams on contract awareness and best practices.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Diploma or degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, Contract Management, Law, Business Administration, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in contracts or commercial management, ideally within a Canadian engineering or environmental consulting firm.
- Strong understanding of Canadian contract law, public procurement rules, and professional liability issues in consulting.
- Familiarity with standard forms of agreement used in Canada, such as ACEC, CCDC, or client-specific contract formats.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex contractual language and identify commercial risks.
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and written communication skills.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or contract lifecycle management systems.
- A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
- Secret level security clearance (or eligibility to obtain one) is required for this role, due to the nature of certain client and project work.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset.
