Controls and HVAC Service Technician

Position Summary
Reporting directly to the Director of Commercial Sales & Marketing, the Controls and HVAC Service Technician is responsible for the following:
- Perform preventive maintenance and service on HVAC mechanical and controls systems.
- Conduct start-ups and commissioning of HVAC systems.
- Ensure customer satisfaction through proactive, timely service and providing technical solutions or recommendations.
- Carry out all work in accordance with the terms of the service contract.
- Support business growth by identifying opportunities and building strong customer relationships.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Service and Maintenance
- Ensures all work is performed in compliance with safety standards and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
- Performs preventative maintenance, service, and maintenance jobs on HVAC mechanical and control systems.
- Troubleshoots and repairs HVAC mechanical and controls issues, including refrigeration, ventilation, electrical, electronic, and digital controls.
- Provides proactive service and recommendations for future repairs and improvements to help optimize systems.
- Identifies opportunities for retrofits of mechanical and controls systems to help generate business.
- Completes and submits work order reports in a timely manner.
- Schedules service work independently to ensure timely completion of tasks.
Retrofit & New Installations
- Ensures safety measures are followed during retrofits, installations, and commissioning to protect team members and customers.
- Conducts retrofits and installations of HVAC mechanical systems.
- Performs startups, installations, and commissioning of all elements of HVAC mechanical and controls systems to help develop technical skills and knowledge.
- Scopes technical details for new projects or retrofits to ensure accurate estimates, serving as the technical expert in these tasks.
Systems Diagnostics & Applications
- Prioritizes safety when diagnosing, starting up, and commissioning systems to avoid risks and ensure secure operations.
- Understands how HVAC systems work as a whole and uses this knowledge to identify problems, start up, and commission systems effectively. Provides practical solutions to fix issues or improve the system performance.
Customer Service
- Provides excellent customer service and develops key customer relationships by providing proactive service and recommendations.
- Communicates effectively with customers and team members on work being performed.
Coordination & Reporting
- Receives work orders assigned by the Service Coordinator and ensures tasks are prioritized and scheduled effectively.
- Ensures work orders are closed upon completion of tasks, providing accurate and detailed reports to facilitate timely billing and administrative processing.
Ethics And Values
- Adheres to the company's values and code of ethics, demonstrating professionalism and integrity in all aspects of the role.
Qualifications & Experience
- Post-secondary education in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning with 1-3 years of experience in a service-oriented environment within a similar industry.
- Gas Fitter 1 Technician license or Oil Burner certification will be considered an asset for candidates actively working toward completion.
- Good knowledge of HVAC and controls systems, energy management systems to effectively troubleshoot system issues.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to develop good relationships with customers and generate new business.
- Good communication skills with the ability to communicate and work with other trades on-site. Fluency in more than one language is an asset.
- Self- motivated with the ability to sort through work orders and set priorities.
- Strong technical skills and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence, mentor, and develop entry level technicians.
Working Conditions May Require
- Adheres to safety protocols during all tasks to minimize risk and maintain a safe work environment.
- Frequent travel to job sites to complete work orders.
- Working overtime outside normal working hours with minimal notice.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted when receiving and installing project materials.
- Working in environmental conditions including heat/cold, noise, and inclement weather.
- Completing repetitive motion tasks and intense concentration or focus (e.g., analyzing mechanical and electrical drawings, troubleshooting control systems, installing electrical wiring).
- Climbing a ladder, reaching, and bending during installation.
