Job Summary
This Faculty Purchasing & Safety Technician is responsible for ordering, receiving and coordinating distribution of supplies and equipment, supports and coordinates safety initiatives and protocols and may provide technical and health and safety guidance to the various Land and Food System facilities.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Faculty Operations Manager and indirectly to FNH Building Manager. Works with faculty, staff, students and others to facilitate purchasing of equipment and supplies. Liaises with Procurement Services/Supply Management, various University units and interacts with various suppliers and vendors. Liaises with Safety & Risk Services and is an active member of the Operations Team and LST/JOHSC.
Work Performed
- Oversees vender accounts and documentation and troubleshoots errors in shipments, contacts vendors for adjustments, arranges for return shipments, substitutions, and timelines for shipping materials.
- Works with LFS community to inform LFS staff about procurement process.
- Maintains inventories of Faculty equipment, supplies and materials through the Quartzy system.
- Maintains MSDA/WHMIS/Lab Safety procedures and policies brings safety or lab policy issues or problems to the attention of the LST's and JOHSC
- Follows up with research groups to ensure chemical inventories are maintained. Assisting in laboratory chemical safety data sheets updates and maintains the faculty chemical inventory.
- Aids in the handling and proper disposition of chemicals; WHMIS labels records use, ordering of pressurized gas cylinders and ensuring personnel know how to transport safely.
- Maintains Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) records.
- Work with the operations team to develop, implement, coordinate and assess department plans, initiatives and policies to improve safety, to encourage a philosophy of safety and to ensure plans are in compliance with federal, provincial, municipal and university health and safety regulations (UBC, WCB, WHMIS, etc.).
- Serves as an advisor/member on the various Local Safety Committees (LST) and JOHSC providing support to ensure faculty compliance with all relevant safety regulatory legislation and UBC policies.
- Assists in coordinating Safety Plans for fire prevention and emergency response plans. Ensures all plans and practices are in compliance with current fire department regulations and procedures
- Provides safety training orientations to users and visitors as required.
- Under the direction of the various LST's schedule, coordinates, participates and follows-up on regular safety inspections, evaluating compliance levels, recommending improvements, and implementing upgrades to mitigate risks.
- Supports the decommissioning of laboratories or workstations during renovations, retirement and departure of staff, faculty, students, and researchers.
- Following up and assisting on CAIRS reports
- Maintains inventory of core equipment and maintenance logs including autoclave reporting for both MCML and FNH buildings.
- Coordinates vehicle bookings, maintaining vehicle keys and records, following up with vehicle users for invalid/missing account information.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Any delay in ordering/receiving process may result in hold-up of ongoing experiments and large financial as well as time cost. Helping ensure compliance with UBC/SRS/WCB safety policies impacts both on personal safety of all faculty, students, staff and others, and on liability issues for the University.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Faculty Operations Manager and indirectly to the FNH Building Manager. Works independently and receives specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure. Exercises a considerable amount of judgement, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods, and implementing the work of the unit.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant discipline such as Agricultural Sciences or Science.
- A thorough knowledge of related procedures and practices and their applications.
- Demonstrated experience working in a research and/or teaching laboratory with knowledge of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Computer experience at an intermediate level (MS Office, Workday) using spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and email is required.
- Completion of, or enrollment in, radioisotope handling, Biohazard, and WHMIS courses required.
- Transportation of dangerous goods certification course required.
- Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to lift and carry materials up to 25 kg.
