Hamilton, Ontario, Canada J & M Construction Services Full time

Employment Type: Part Time / Full Time

About J AND M Construction

At J AND M Construction, we don't just renovate houses; we build better living experiences. Specializing in high-end residential transformations—including custom kitchens, spa-like bathrooms, structural additions, and premium outdoor living spaces (decks/fences)—we have built a reputation on Transparency, Organization, and Craftsmanship. We are looking for a motivated Carpenter Helper / Labourer who is eager to get their hands dirty, learn the "J AND M way," and grow into a lead role. If you have a passion for seeing a project go from a 3D design to a physical reality, we want to hear from you.

Comprehensive Responsibilities

In this role, your responsibilities are not limited to "carrying wood." You are an integral part of the production cycle. Your duties include but are not limited to:

1. Carpentry & Technical Assistance:

  • Framing & Structural: Assist in the layout and assembly of floor systems, wall framing, and roof rafters.
  • Exterior Living: Help build high-end custom decks, railings, and privacy fences; including digging footings, leveling posts, and precision board gapping.
  • Finishing Touches: Assist with the installation of baseboards, window casings, crown molding, and door hardware.
  • Material Prep: Accurately measure, mark, and cut lumber, trim, and siding according to blueprints and lead carpenter instructions.

2. Site Operations & Logistics:

  • Setup & Protection: Implement our "Respect the Home" policy by laying down floor protection (Ram Board/Drop cloths) and setting up dust containment systems.
  • Inventory Management: Organize deliveries, verify material counts against packing slips, and ensure the right hardware is ready before the lead carpenter needs it.
  • Equipment Care: Responsible for the daily maintenance, cleaning, and organized storage of all power tools (miter saws, table saws, drills, etc.).

3. Demolition & Site Preparation:

  • Perform surgical demolition (preserving structural integrity and salvageable materials) rather than "smash and grab."
  • Safe removal of debris, ensuring all sites are "broom-clean" at the end of every single work day.
  • Assist with basic concrete work, including mixing, pouring, and leveling for small pads or footings.

4. Client & Team Interaction:

  • Represent J and M Construction professionally when interacting with homeowners.
  • Communicate clearly with the Project Manager regarding material shortages or site challenges.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum [1-2 years] in residential construction or a related trade is preferred, but a high level of mechanical aptitude and a "can-do" attitude can replace years of experience.
  • Tools: Must own basic personal hand tools (Tool belt, tape measure, hammer, speed square, level, utility knife).
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift 50+ lbs consistently, climb ladders, and work in crawl spaces or on roofs in various weather conditions.
  • Drivers License: Valid G License and a reliable vehicle are non-negotiable (sites vary daily from Hamilton to Oakville/Grimsby).
  • Mindset: Extreme attention to detail—you notice the small things like a crooked screw or a dusty floor.

Why Work With Us?

  • Mentorship: Work directly under Jay, we want to teach you the trade.
  • Modern Workflow: We use 3D renderings and detailed project management software to stay organized—no chaotic job sites here.
  • Stability: Consistent year-round work with a backlog of high-quality projects.
  • Growth: We prefer to promote from within. Show us your skill, and we will move you into an Apprentice or Lead Carpenter role.
