Overview

Reporting to the Facilities manager the Maintenance Skilled Trades role is responsible for ensuring that buildings, equipment, and systems remain in good working condition.

Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled work relative to the maintenance and repair of university
  • buildings, equipment, furniture and vehicles
  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled work in trades such as carpentry and general construction,
  • painting, locksmithing and door and hardware repairs, welding and masonry work.
  • Report to the lead hand in Building Maintenance and assist in the solution of problems related
  • to the operation and usage of the Physical Plant buildings, equipment, furniture and vehicles.
  • Maintains appropriate work records.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 education and completion of tradesman qualifications as a carpenter. Commercial hardware and locksmith experience.
  • Several years of directly related experience of recognized practices of a particular trade
  • Knowledge of recognized practices and techniques and the use of tools, equipment common to
  • the trade
  • Ability to perform manual work.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to deal courteously with staff, students and the public
  • One-person unassisted lifting of 50 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work and to work on ladders, scaffolds, etc.
  • Climbing of ladders on a regular basis
  • Good hand dexterity (pinning for locksmith work)
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and other health and safety regulations and standards
  • Must have a good employment record
  • Must have a good record of attendance and punctuality
